"Auburn's conglomerate, so to speak, some people have reached out to James Franklin's people just to see if there is any interest," Marcello said. "That's what's been going for several weeks. Is there any interest (from Franklin's side)? No. But is it possible? Yes. We've seen the carousel the past few years with Lincoln Riley, Brian Kelly and now Luke Fickell. Anything is possible. Especially if you swing and miss a couple of times and you have to go big or go home. James Franklin, keep in mind, signed a deal with Penn State just a little more than a year ago. But his buyout, should he leave that job, is only about $8 million. That's kind of chump change for any SEC team. ... But very early there and they are not actively pursing him at this time."
This is what is wrong w/ AU. Auburn's "conglomerate"??? Are you kidding me? The idea of James Franklin should appeal to the AD but is there some kind of pseudo athletic department reaching out to coaches and creating agendas? That is crazy. 247 Article
Both Franklin and Dykes should have been pursued over Freeze and maybe even Kiffin. They also should have told Rhule not to accept anything because we are about to give you a Gus Bus offer. Franklin, Rhule, Dykes and then you talk to Kiffin and Freeze. They have been trying to fire Harsin since he was hired; why no plan?

Lane has approached Auburn several times about openings…this time, he got really close, and saw the level of crazy, and said “no thanks”. He’s going to be heck to deal with next year when he pairs with tamu. Remember, can’t win anything of significance at Ole Miss…just not possible.

I told a Barner friend of mine last night that they were setting their sights too high, that realistically it was no more than the fifth or sixth best job in the conference regardless of the facilities and tradition, and that throwing money at people can’t erase the underlying toxicity there that’s gonna scare top-echelon candidates off.
Probably why Matt Rhule and Luke Fickell accepted jobs elsewhere.

Everyone with an Aubie tail hanging out of their trunk had a source telling them Lane was heading to Auburn last week. Now he never got an offer.

No coach in Auburn history had problems beating OLE PISS, even Harsin did it.

Auburn fans should get on Twitter and clear up this misconception

I fell in love with the Auburn coach who beat Ole miss 5 times in a row

Media/Auburn can float rumors about Kiffin, never offer him the position, and totally polarize the Ole Miss fanbase and team, while also destroying prospects for the postseason and future success.

Kiffin whipped your arse and then rejected your offer. I understand why you’re upset

That’s fine and all, I’m certainly not overly happy about the last few weeks for us.
But with that said, without Kiffin or Freeze, and now with Rhule and Fickell off the table, is there even a possible hire out there that won’t be seen as a massive failure for Auburn?

Meanwhile Matt Rhule and Luke Fickell accepted offers and Auburn remains without a coach.

I'm calling b.s. on this. Why would Kiffin approach AU? If he really wanted to leave OM, why not aim for a blue blood?

There is a good chance that

It’s almost like a lot of people predicted he would from the start

I wouldn't be either. We've gone through it with Tubs and Gus and it's never a good feeling.

Freeze is off the table too? I don't think Rhule or Fickell were ever candidates, right or wrong.
