I'll bet that it was him and one of his homeboys cooking up a plan to get some extra money. His buddy bets a couple grand, and they split the profits.
That's my thinking too.

However, I am a total noob when it comes to sports betting, but would you really make that much $$$ on betting the opponent to cover? If Bama was an 8 point favorite and I bet $1000 on them to cover, wouldn't end up getting $1000 from the bookie would I? I would think that the favored team covering would pay less than betting the dog and have the favored team not cover.

Seems to me that point shaving would only really work as a money maker if your team was favored and you were purposely not covering the spread.

He was "injured" early in that game. Some speculate he faked the injury. Not sure why if you needed to shave points. Maybe he had second thoughts about it and decided to go down rather than actively shave.

I posted this a couple pages back, but I'll repeat it. The Arky "injury" could have been a test run for Ward to see if he was willing to play ball. Whoever is going to make a future bet with Ward in his back pocket would damn sure want to know if he could be trusted to "throw" the game. What better way than to tell Ward to go down with an injury early in the game?

No, that is the purpose of the point spread. To theoretically make it even odds on both sides. Instead of just picking the winner of the game, the favored team has to win by a certain number of points to cover the spread.

Ward has a sick mother in Montgomery, maybe he needed money to take care of her hospital expenses. Desperate times causes for desperate measures.

Lame excuse IMO and unlikely to be true.

Yep, you would. If you bet $1000 on Bama to cover 8 points and they do, you win $1000. If they don't cover the 8 points, you owe the bookie $1100(the thousand you bet plus a 10% juice fee). If Bama ended up winning by exactly 8 points, you would owe the bookie $100(just the 10% bookie/juice fee). If you win a bet, there is no fee.

That his reasoning for doing it (if he did) was to get money to help his sick mother.

Also, even if it was, it doesn't provide any justification, IMO.

Well if many people speculated that Bama might not cover due to suspensions of Green and Mitchell and their struggles on the road and started to bet on Auburn, wouldn't there be more money to get from betting on Bama and few people to collect from winning if most betted on Auburn due to reasons described above. Auburn has been a tough opponent at home all year long.

When will the NTY'S next article come out on the trees or how the REC is responsible for setting up this point shaving deal vs AU's basketball team because they are scared/jealous of Au and the new arena etc. Tin foil hat off now. LOL

No way he was getting rich. I suspect 1 of 2 things happened:

1) some local bookmaker whom he knows tossed the idea out while they were hanging out (possibly high and drunk) and Varez saw a chance to make a few quick bucks; or

2) Varez had a gambling debt or some other debt he couldn't cover with a local thug and this was a way to escape it.
