So why is the SEC pushing the season start date back as opposed to starting earlier?

Now keep in mind I'm saying this for PLAYING the games. Not whether or not fans attend. Because with the lack of fans at pro events, I think we need to stop focusing on that issue so much.

By waiting a few weeks, I'm starting to think the SEC is wondering if they are going to push back the season to the spring to get the most games in. Why let the Big 12 and ACC out there with the wolves to lead CFB back? My guess is they don't think it's going to be successful or the NFL start isn't, so they are going to let them lead.

It just doesn't make much sense to start earlier in a sense when all football players have been on campus essentially bubbled with few positive cases. If we go ahead and play, more games will be played for sure.

It's just interesting for sure cause I don't think pushing it back buys more time when they have more time to interact with students on campus who will definitely party and test positive. Outside of the loss of players declaring for the NFL draft, I doubt they see a loss to the season because Alabama fans or Florida fans aren't going to stop watching cause a few of their players will no longer be there. They'll want the maximized number of games played, and that does that.

Season is in real jeopardy, flu season plus Covid is going to be a total shitshow. Media fear mongering will be unbearable.

There is no answer. Early gives you time to stretch the season. Late May allow more fans.

They expect surges in infection when students return to campus.

Simple as that, hopefully Sept 24 gives it time to settle out.

They expect a surge when students return to campus and they want to see how the nfl does in the first few weeks. Simple as that.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner. They are hoping to ride out the early surge of cases.

Another consideration too it allows other conferences to be the guinea pigs and see what works and what doesn’t

IMO, They are still leaning towards cancelling the season, but there is no harm to the conference leadership/ADs to just punt the decision down the road in the event that there is an opening/drop in cases that allows them to get games in.

The current political environment makes it impossible for them to make a decision without people getting pissed off.

The current projections show deaths starting to pile up around the late September/early October timeframe. If they were to start the season on time, they would likely get blame attached to them by the media, and if a single death can be traced to a player then lawsuits will fly.

The PR angle of all this is why NBA is operating in a bubble and why MLB is currently falling apart. The NBA can claim that they did everything possible to prevent spread outside of their organization. The MLB can not.

If they get into late September and things are bad, it will be politically easier for them to cancel than it would be now. Conversely, if it looks like things are dying down they can make a decision to delay instead of cancel.

TLDR: They couldn't feasibly start on time and just delayed the decision. They only phrased it as a "new start date" to keep people from being pissy.

Also as others said, it taunts the other conferences into being "guinea pigs" in the sense that they will also absorb the blame if the pandemic worsens.
