He didn't owe Dodd anything
It was a blatant cheap shot that ended Chuck Granning's career and he's lucky it did cause permanent brain injury.Dodd and Granning aren't the bad guys here.

Dodd didn't play well with the other kids and would rather take his ball and go home. How'd that work out?
Two separate issues and the only "other" he didn't play well with was Bama.

??? Not sure what this means but at the time several SEC schools including Bama would routinely sign way more players than they coukd ever use and the proceed to "cut them" in fall camp and it's something that Dodd never practiced.

Sewanee left the conference and all those rivalries as well. Sad af
Sewanee was the bigger loss for the conference. They can claim the greatest team of all time and I don't think any of us can argue against that. GOAT
On a side note, me and my daughter visited Sewanee when she was a high school junior and she was looking at colleges. They wanted her to swim for them. We visited. That school has a pretty little Gothic style campus that would remind you a little of Duke. But it is in the middle of fricking NOWHERE!! I thought I had seen some remote places, being from Alabama but Sewanee, bless their hearts, gives new meaning to the term "in the sticks." After the visit, I asked my daughter what she thought and she said, "Cute place, but HELL NO!"

quote:bullshite. Bryant lost to Dodd once in seven games ('62) at Alabama. That's why Dodd/GT hauled arse.
Until then, it was quite a brawl each year with Tech usually winning as many as they lost.

Dude, you don't leave a conference because someone hurt your feelings, or you happen to be at a philosophical impasse. The fact that one man could change the course of sports forever at a University is my biggest takeaway. He had more power than commonsense.
Frankly, it's impossible for me to see one person, any person, having that kind of leverage in college athletes like that again. Dodd destroyed GaTech football tradition forever. He should be remembered for that moment as a cautionary tale about how power corrupts.

Dodd would? He bitched about it long enough. Georgia Tech’s decision to leave the SEC centered around the SEC’s Rule 140, which limited the total number of scholarships in football and basketball to 140. The teams were able to sign up to 45 football players annually but could not exceed the 140 limits. Bobby Dodd felt that rule forced coaches to over-sign and then run players off who weren’t good enough.
Those recruiting numbers weren't a BAMA problem any more than what coach Saban gets done today with the recruiting numbers. Thems the rules. Get good at it.
Again, what did it end up costing the Yellowjackets in gridiron success and national prestige? Cause they certainly were walking in high cotton before the grand exodus.

It was bad no doubt about it...but it was Dodd's public, high handed attitude making demands publicly and in the press about what Bryant should do regarding disciplining his player that got Bryant's back up.
