Meaning that bankruptcy is inevitable?

Meaning that Louisiana's legislature -- Republican, Democrat and Independent -- are perfectly happy to let Jindal take all the heat over the budget problems and screw the state in the process. Jindal, of course, has not helped with his worthless presidential aspirations, but the blame reaches far beyond him.

If Jindal would stop being best friends with Grover Norquist and realize that taxes are necessary, the Louisiana economy might not be such a shite situation

this has nothing to do with athletics. the athletic dept is it's own entity and financially supports itself (as well as some other aspects of the university)

Not as most people think of filing for bankruptcy, yes. However to file for financial exigency is essentially academic bankruptcy. They layoff a lot of staff, then they layoff the faculty, then they can go after the tenured professors. (I guarantee you in all of those tenured professor contracts there is a financial exigency clause.)

During this time, they will cut majors and the overall number of classes offered. Some research (independently funded) programs will keep on rolling, however any department/college that had most of their funding come directly from the state or LSU's coffers will be dramatically impacted.

Some students who are planning on going there this fall may start looking at backup plans, but where this is going hit hardest is going to be the faculty. LSU's recruiting efforts for quality faculty would be absolutely slaughtered, even for ind funded programs. The overall prestige of the academic institution takes a major hit when financial exigency is put in place.

Certainly posturing. LSU is the big dog in higher ed in the state, so they are putting the pressure on Jindal and the legislature. Higher education has been cut year after year, passing on the costs to the students through tuition hikes. Just means more debt for students with a diminishing level of education.

To be fair, Louisiana has far too many four year schools. Consolidation of schools and closure of others is going to be necessary.

The state budget is a disaster. The pensions for state workers are very expensive, most of the state spending is required by constitutional amendments (Alabama folks know all about this too), and Jindal has been rolling out tax cuts and tax credits without figuring out how to pay for them when all the one time money from Katrina and the oil spill dried up. Raising taxes isn't going to be popular in an election year and Jindal will veto any tax hikes because he has to look like a good conservative to get blasted in the GOP primary. The budget has to be balanced by law, so the only room to do that will involve more deep cuts to higher education.

I know it would be unpopular around here, but the Medicaid expansion money would be really useful right now. It's not a fix and will be a cost down the road, but would have allowed some time to get the budget in order and would have avoided a number of higher ed cuts over the past few years so that now it wouldn't be such a big issue.

I'm sure Jindal deep down is smiling at the steaming pile of shite he's going to leave David Vitter to fix.

In your opinion, do you think the Chavis contract had anything to do with this?

This. LSU was having a hard enough time finding good faculty when I was there 5 years ago. This is going to make it completely worse.
