SEC was at a low point in the mid-late 1970s with only Bama and UGA really being great

Probably right and while UGA had some good years I'm not sure the program was ever "great" in the 70's.Bama pretty much carried the conference.

OU, Nebraska,USC and ND were clearly the dominant national programs along with Bama.

Bama won every SEC title between 1971-81 except for 1971-81 except for 1976 and 1980 (UGA). 1981 was shared by the two. Incredible

Both Bama and Notre Dame had great teams that year. I think ND won the championship that year because they destroyed previously undefeated and #1 Texas in the Cotton Bowl 38-10

ND dominated Texas. UT was squarely at number 1 and led by Earl Campbell in his Heisman year. The demolition that ND put upon Texas gave them the title with little doubt.

Definitely. I think why I dislike Dan Devine so much is that he lobbied hard for Notre Dame after the bowls were over, saying if you beat #1 you should be #1. One year later, when Alabama beat #1 Penn State in the Sugar Bowl, he voted USC #1 because they had beaten us earlier in the year - completely contradicting his argument from the year before.

Kansas later had to forfeit their win other Missouri in 1960 due to an ineligible player. Missouri was the #1 team in the land. Even though they got the loss turned into a win, it was too late to get back in the NC hunt. Missouri should be the 1960 national champion over Minnesota and has more of a claim than Mississippi.

And some necks wonder why we Mizzou folks still want to burn Larry Town just one more time.

Missouri curb stomped Alabama to open the 1975 season. Was a Monday night game. I was shocked. Wasn't Devine coached Missouri but still.....

It is a shame that ND don't have the stones
to get in a conference! Bunch of pussy's Army is a big game for them!

We had absolutely crushed Ole Miss to the tune of 34-13 the week before. Notre Dame lost to those little shits and ended up vaulting over us to win the '77 national crown. Our only loss was a 31-24 defeat at the hands of Nebraska (the same day Notre Dame lost to Ole Miss), who ended up finishing in the Top 10 that year. Ole Miss finished 5-6.

At Lincoln with the winning score on a 4th down fake FG TD pass that the Bama DB attempted to intercept rather than knock the ball down.
