You said the 11-1 coach was waiting on the 0-8 school to call.

He was at Arkansas State when this went down you numbskull.

Seriously, I doubt your competence in many areas, but I'm not being facetious here:

If you were me, which would you believe?

A) The story told by the media, Auburn, Malzahn and the common belief held by a likely majority of SEC fans (which either doesn't include your assertion or contradicts it).

B) The Arkansas message board poster and possible employee who is in a debate about whether the bottom tier (right now) program should have hired the coach of the top tier (right now) program.

So what's the story told by the media?

Auburn said "Hey Gus, wanna coach here?" and Gus said "Sure!"

Is that the story?

Wow, that's an enormous sample size.

You are right...I'll expand. With the exception of their success against Arkansas...historically, Wisconsin is 2-8 against SEC teams.

Oh really? Don't be an idiot. I'm talking about your motivation for spinning this story. Are you really so daft as to believe I didn't understand he was at Arkansas State, or that an obsessed, message board posting Auburn fan wouldn't have followed his progress after his tenure as OC at Auburn?

This ignores that I've followed him since the Mustain debacle, because like everyone else on here, I'm an avid CFB fan.

This hire was not just made about football. The university had to make a hire that was above reproach. Malzahn was not that man at this time. The bitter feelings people have toward him are still very much there. To say that U of A wanted Malzahn is a farce. He wasnt even on the radar. You also need to know you go to Chris Lincoln for your coaching news in regards to hires for U of A, never trust anyone from LR or NWA when it comes to who is really being discussed.

That is pretty much how most college searches go, in essence, so sure.

Auburn was interviewing and going after other candidates. A contingent of Auburn folks loved Gus and wanted to make a conservative hire. They settled, as I understand, on Jimbo as the conservative #1. Talks with Jimbo's people died, we moved the other conservative choice, and that went quickly.

I've never heard from any other source that Auburn was waiting around for Gus to get Arky's answer. I've never even seen a message board poster indicate that before.

I like you but no...unless you are talking about the casual fan. Malzahn would not have done better than Bielema this year.

None of this is anything I've argued. My point has never been that Arky was longing for Malzahn, and I'm aware that there were conflicted opinions on Malzahn. I would guess that there is some latent issue with hiring an Arky State coach too, but I don't know that for certain.

You use "above reproach" which I find interesting. Do you mean "non-controversial" or morally/ethically above reproach? I ask because the former makes sense given the conflicting views on Gus, the latter aligns with Arky fans' hush-hush "he's a terrible person" narrative that is never explained.

For you Latarian....

DC,
My honest opinion is BB will build a good program and both schools will be giving each other fits for years to come. Just having some fun with my hog friends.

Arkansas is an average football program. 10 wins will always be their ceiling. Gus has stated he wanted to coach where he could win a title. I know he didn't want the Arky job. They should stick to basketball, which they have been historically great at.

Alright, I tried to reason down on your level, and got nowhere. Best of luck with Bert.

Bro, if I'm "spinning" anything it makes Arkansas look much worse. See if you can follow:

Arkansas could have hired Gus.
We went with Bielema instead.
Gus is 11-1 and Bret went 0-8.

How is that "spinning the story?"

Quite obviously, because you had a bad season, and you want to make it look like you (Arky, collectively) knows something we don't. You're playing the "long game." The idea is that BB will pay off eventually. That concept is reinforced by saying you turned down a championship-caliber coach, who was begging to come there, but you're above short-term, gimmicky success in favor of something far more grand.

You're going all in with your selection. It's what I'd do. While I guess you're saying that you could blame the hire on Gus not wanting the Arky job, that would essentially be conceding that the BB experiment is already a bust. You won't do that, so upping the ante on BB is the move.
