A major program 3 years is the bar. You know what you are getting by year 3.
Smaller programs five years.
Most national title winning coaches won it at that school, within three years. Only Jimbo and Dabo took longer. Dabo was a rare case where patience worked, but he still won the ACC I believe in year two so had shown signs of being very good.
Fact is. No excuse for coaches to not win at elite programs relatively quickly. Resources are there, you just have to be good at your job.

2-3 years is enough if the team is not improving . With the team improving then 4-5 years.

4 years - as long as the program looks like it's moving in the right direction. The 1st year the HC will be behind the 8 ball in recruiting, so hard to count that first class against them.

I'd say 4-5 years. There are some factors to consider that might buy them an extra year, probation/sanctions, etc. Outside of that, the coach should have signed all of the kids he recruited for his system. He wanted X type of kids for this offense or defense. No excuses. There should be marked improvement each year. Say 5-6 wins the first season, followed by 7, then 8, etc. Don't fluctuate like a damn yo-yo!! 4, then 9, then 3-4, 10, etc.
