And your story is completely wrong. I was there. There were probably 40-50 UGA fans who went on the field. Many of them drunk - probably due in large part to AUs very lax alcohol control at that time. Alcohol was everywhere. You could smell It in the air. One would have thought you were at the Ga//Fla cocktail party before the crackdown. AU basically turned a blind eye as alcohol was being opening drank inside the stadium. A few less than sober UGA fans decided turn about was fair since AU had once trashed our hedges went onto the field and started taking some of the turf. Most were in the center of the field where AU security first turned the fire hoses. They were hosed and quickly arrested. Then the AU guys behind the water cannons decided it would be fun to turn the hoses into the end zone where the UGA fans were leaving the game. They did and it created a stampede in the 40 degree weather. Some were injured like the lady we helped and some were drenched. All were mad as hell at classless AU. Things have never been the same between our schools since. We despise these goobers who thought the entire thing was funny and not the potential danger that it posed. Nothing has happened since the mid 80s to change our opinions and I doubt anything ever will. AU sucks and since Georgias emergence as the top dog of college football they have been especially vile in their jealousy and envy. Guess that’s what happens when your team loses year after year after year.

Truer words never spoken…..and the series, at the time, had only been 1 or 2 games difference between the two teams and the series point differential was less than a TD. Since UGA had one of the roughest stretches in program history and still has managed to stretch the lead to one of the biggest gaps in series history….

The UGA fans were hardly destroying the field - which looked pretty crappy to begin with- they were taking some turf that was mostly near midfield. AU didn’t mind trampling and breaking our hedges but we didn’t turn water cannons on them. Didn’t arrest them either. We just cleaned up the mess and paid for the repairs ourself.
It’s all history now. AU got so much negative attention for their stupid action and reaction to it I doubt anyone will see those water cannons again, but their spite and hatred are palatable. Especially since UGA has owned their arse for over 20 years and now sits at the top of college football. Eat your hearts out you Aubie goobers. You suck

This guy hasn't been outside Clarke county Georgia and knows nothing about other campuses. The video clearly shows just how envious the state school of Georgia has always been when it comes to this little ole Cow College. Hell, Vince even states so in the interview.
Took these guys 19 plus years to catch up and finally go ahead in the series. Only up one with the Natty count.

This guy hasn't been outside Clarke county Georgia and knows nothing about other campuses. The video clearly shows just how envious the state school of Georgia has always been when it comes to this little ole Cow College. Hell, Vince even states so in the interview.

Vince Dooley turned down one million dollars to go to AU after UGAs 80 Natty. And that was an unheard of amount of money in those days. His young son cried at the very thought of having to move to Auburn. He was quoted as saying “I hate Auburn”. Barbara Dooley, an AU grad, said if Vince totally lost his mind and took the job she hoped he would come to Athens often to visit her and their family. He didn’t bite at AUs offer and after the water cannon game and several other incidents with Dye and AU he seemed to have little love for the place.
FYI I’ve visited every SEC school. We go to all the UGA games. Covid disrupted our 40 plus years of straight home games and did the same to an almost perfect away record but things got back to normal last season. I’ve seen college station and the Aggie stadium from the outside on a trip to Texas a few years ago. It wasn’t during a football game as we haven’t been forced to play there yet. Thank you SEC.
