Actually, I think that was the year that Gary Ruttledge and Richard Todd were the players swapped out with the play calls. They were the two QB's.

have to say there were some colorful guesses.

Alabama had a guy who had signed as a QB named Danny Ridgeway who had been injured and couldn't play. But he dressed out and Bryant or designated staff member gave him the play and he ran to the huddle and back for every play all season.

I bet Ridgeway got tired of that. He did it on offense and defense?

does it have anything to do with them claiming a MNC then losing to Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl?

This, as most knowledgeable college football fans know, was during a time when the bowls were widely viewed as exhibitions/rewards for a good season. You didn't have 30+ bowls then. The AP National Championship was awarded before the bowls. Claiming an AP National Championship before the bowls back then was not unique to Alabama.

It was the UPI NC that was awarded before the Bowls. It's now the coaches poll. The AP awarded the title after the Bowls. They gave it to ND.

Negative ghostrider.

I was watching a video earlier of a post-game interview with Bear Bryant after the 1979 Sugar Bowl. The interviewer said he had a vote in the UPI poll and then asked him which team he planned on voting #1.

I was going to guess dueling banjos, but that was the year they made Deliverance. Their GA was probably busy on location.

He was the place kicker and very good at that. Coach Bryant always said it was shooting fish in a barrel when he came in for the extra point. He didn't miss many. You kids missed some great stuff!

They changed the voting after '73 so he was correct.
