It means that, until Saban stepped in, he was blackballed by the SEC for his actions at Tennessee (which has been known for some time). At that point in time, his career was effectively over, and he was considered to be persona non grata. You have to remember: This is an extremely small circle, so your reputation and actions can easily follow you everywhere.
