Can someone explain to me how an sec champion was determined before 1992. I'm clueless to how that worked. TIA

Team with the best conference win percentage. The conference itself didn't have everyone play an equal amount until the 80s though.

You could have co-champs regardless of head to head. Auburn is still credited with 1988 even though LSU beat them in the earthquake game.

Your confusion is understandable, you thought football began in 2003

BAMA was originally declared SEC champion after the 1961 season on the basis of their 8-0 conference record while LSU had a 7-0 record. Later they were declared co-champions.

They were both SEC champ since both had the same win percentage.

It's almost as embarrassing as having Tulane on your schedule every year up until 96...

Seriously, Bama also had Tennessee, the second best SEC team of all time, on the schedule every year as well. But sure, muh Vandy...

He asked about 1992, over a decade earlier. Math is still undefeated against the gulps SMH

I never knew this either. Fascinating. I feel like that is a terrible way of determining a champion though.

I remember one year in the mid-late 80s, or maybe early nineties, Ole Miss and Alabama played, but it didn’t count as a conference game.

I assume Ole Miss won and this was determined after the fact

Based on a 55-27-5 record against lsu they were always easy money too apparently.

Tell me something, why is it Alabama fans are so reluctant to put the script a up as their flair? Been a thing on this site for literally 15 years. No other fan base seems to have this issue.

Bear picked the games, Refs, the times etc buy every once in way his team wasn’t great so he tried to give it to LSU or Georgia and frick Tenner.
We were all friends back then. He never intentionally ducked LSU like Saban try’s to do 10 times before breakfast but different times we were much less a threat. He got drunk and played cars all night Friday before the game at charley macs house to tell you how much he was worried about us

The SEC offices in Birmingham just awarded it to Alabama every year.
