I don't care one way or the other about Texas.... I just thought it odd that y'all claim a title in which you lost the last game of the year in an era in which bowl games mattered.

As GoGator1995 said, every team that was voted #1 in the AP or UPI Coaches poll claims a title for that year even if they lost or chose not to play in a bowl game. Texas is no exception. UPI awarded it to us and we acknowledge the award. You might find that odd, but I'm sure there are plenty of Ohio State fans that find your 1942 title claim to be odd as well.

Tennessee is dead. LSU killed you in 2001.

Cry harder.

The polls and championship awards prior to the 70's were pretty odd to be honest. UGA got awarded a title in 1942 by one selector. We didn't in 1946 and the 1946 team was more deserving.

UGA was undefeated and untied in 1946 at 10-0. They finished 3rd. the teams in second and first both had a tie on their record (Army was 9-0-1 and ND was 8-0-1). And yes they tied to each other.

It's not like they played a different number of ranked teams. Each ended with 2 or 3 ranked opponents on their final schedule. The only difference is UGA won all their games.

However, before the 40's UGA was a nobody in college football. ND and Army were royalty (as was OSU in 1942). So the polls were what they were.

The other reason for 1942 being claimed is that the AP poll voted before bowl games. OSU didn't play in a bowl where UGA defeated #13 UCLA in the Rose Bowl (yes, this was before the Big 10 had a tie in with the Rose Bowl). UGA had beaten undefeated GT the week before the end of the regular season which allowed OSU to move into first place.

THe bowl game being included in some of the selectors is why UGA finished ahead of OSU in some of them outside of the AP poll.

Honestly all the polls before the 70's are questionable. Even some since (like BYU's championship in 1984) were pretty stupid.

They can claim anything they want. It just seems strange that they lost their last game of the year and still claim a title to me. Usually when you lose a game you drop in the rankings.

Texas isn’t blue blood.

They are blue haired. They talk about the good ol’ days like a bunch of old women.

I get that when the bowl games were immaterial. but by 1970 they were a big deal. Hey. It's not skin off my teeth. Go ahead and claim it if you feel good about it.

Using that logic a team should claim a title no matter who awards it.

They might...but we were consensus champions and we won our last game, so.....
Texas was not consensus champions and lost their last game of the year.

Texas has FOUR
and could do like other teams have done and claim contested championships claimed by one or more programs.

Guess the LSU fandom has to be happy with those THREE national championships this century. That's more than the whole xii combined. The entire left coast. Just as many as the other 2 P5 conferences big and acc.

Bowls were treated as exhibitions at the time. Nothing strange about it.
