That's a lack of parity problem. N other way to explain it.

Sure there is.

In the pre-BCS days, bowl matchups were set by conference affiliations and teams had regular, traditional OOC foes. There wasn't a lot of cross-competition so when a team came along and made a splash early they got ranked high and stayed there. Whomever became the media darling wasn't dropping unless they fricked up.

Conference title games and the BCS suddenly started breaking down that 'lead dog stays there' system and then the 4 team playoff blew it clear out of the water.

Back in the day, all those elite teams I listed above that had a regular season OOC frickup aren't ending up ranked in the top few because they'd never get the chance to pass that many teams.

Think it's bad now? Expand the playoffs to 8 teams and watch the percentages for the elite programs will go even higher.

Exactly. The only way to fix the problem is either 1) reduce scholarships from 85 down to 80 or so and 2) reduce the number of teams in Division 1 down from 130 to a more respectable number.... don't know whether that's 65 or 65 + the American or what

I don’t see how number 2 would accomplish anything. Actually, I think it’d probably make it worse. It’s gonna be harder to recruit for mid-tier schools going 6-6 as opposed to 9-3/8-4.

More power conference games also favors teams that are able to stack depth. This past season was basically played separate from the G5, and it didn’t help.

I prefer tiers. Top group (25 guys) - likeness control, set salary like a student worker for media appearances, second group (40 guys) - COA, third group (20 guys) - base scholarship. Everyone is guaranteed the second or third tier once they get on campus. Top tier is renewed annually.

I think it’d work better and doesn’t take away from the players.

Smaller conferences would help to.

If Penn State was the premier team in a northeastern league, they’d pull a much better class than being Ohio State’s bitch in a Midwest league.

We are moving towards a reducing in scholarships and conference championship requirements for playoff entry. Can't wait for the Gump melt.

There is no chance that either of the two things you staed above is goign to happen.

So it is usually a few teams that dominate in an era. Just different teams in different eras

All the graphs and rectangle boxes confused me in OP but viceman nailed it with his explanation

Besides the 4 already mentioned I would add Norte Dame to the list.

LSU is the only legit 5th team, and thats debatable due to their bad 2020 season. ND and OU shouldnt be, as they cant beat UGA and often get blown out, but they have easier roads to the playoff, so they get there more often.
