No idea why he'd leave the opportunity to coach his son and be a key player in Bama's coaching staff for the next couple of years.

A) He doesn't like Saban?
B) He doesn't like Alabama?
C) He wants more money?
D) He wants to advance up the coaching ranks?
E) He likes taking risks (Dooley)?
F) All the above?

Take your pick. I think one or more of these is right. Cool your jets Gumps. I'm not saying A and B are the correct answers they are just possibilities. I liked my 3 years in Alabama just fine except for your crazy fans.

Its just the nature of the coaching profession. Assistants moving on is never anything to get wound up about.

None of the above. I really don't understand this move by him, very surprising.

He retired the trophy. They have to let someone else win it to stay relevant.

I think it's more D than anything, but the C he is getting is hard to turn down.

I think you can rule out B, because this is his second trip thru the state of Alabama.

Remember the last "national recruiter of the year" UT hired from Bama? Lance something. Said something about locking down Memphis.

Cecil Hurt just retweeted alluding to it too:

Wes Rucker Make no mistake; Sal Sunseri isn't a foolproof, can't-lose hire. But Tennessee just hired a very respected coach/recruiter to become its DC.

Been on his staff on 3 different occasions with 3 different teams, so I doubt that's the problem.

B) He doesn't like Alabama?

Sent his son to school here and won 2 national championships with us. Doubt that's the problem.

C) He wants more money?

Possibly, but I can't imagine UT offering a whole lot more than Bama would

D) He wants to advance up the coaching ranks?

Most likely scenario, but to me - having to coach against my son and having to recruit against Coach Saban would outweigh that desire, especially since Sal would be the natural choice for DC at Bama when Smart gets a HC gig next year.

Not possible.

I believe he left Saban's LSU staff for Pitt or something along those lines. Saban was p!ssed and said so in a the release announcing it. Was very demonstrative about it.

He's obviously back in the fold now. Then again, so is Booby Williams, so who knows whether he's just a filler coach or whether he's actually worth his salt.

I know he did a good job recruiting for us, and his son's evidently a good football player for Bama. Beyond that, I'm pretty sure Saban & Smart are the braintrust that comes up with most of the schematics week-to-week for Bama's D.

In other coaching news, the University of Tennessee is making a serious run at hiring Alabama assistant Sal Sunseri for the Vols defensive coordinator position. Sources indicate that Saban is working overtime to put together a package to keep Sunseri in Tuscaloosa.

A source close to the Tennessee program indicates the UT offer is likely in the $800,000 a year range with a multi-year guarantee of three years.

Sunseri is expected to make a final decision today and is said to be heavily weighing the Tennessee offer. Should Sunseri accept the Tennessee offer, look for Lance Thompson, Kevin Steele, Geoff Collins, James Willis and Tyrone Nix to be names mentioned as possible replacements.

Bama will pay a position coach as much as UT will pay a DC? Dumb if so.

I would guess it's D. He probably wants to be a DC without having to wait on Kirby Smart to get a job.
