It is 6 to 6 right now. But how many titles would Saban have under the system Bryant won his 6 titles ?

This would include the Bowl Alignment match ups (ie SEC-Sugar).

Imagine if Saban could have 150 players on his squad. Most of them that could start at other P5 schools???

And being able to have unlimited scholarships? He’d probably win it every year. Seriously.

Tough to say

I mean everyone operates under the same rules in Bryant’s day.....Bryant was just better and more cutthroat same as Saban toady.

Both would have been successful in each other’s eras.....football is still football

While I think Saban has passed the Bear, and did so in a much more difficult era, I've always found this argument lacking. Every coach had that same "advantage," which pretty much badly undercut it as, well, an advantage

2003-Two loss LSU would not have won it
2009-Undefeated, but Texas was also undefeated and would have been playing in the Cotton Bowl. Who would have won the vote if both were undefeated ? (1)
2011-LSU would have played in the Sugar and OK St would have played in the Orange. My guess is it still would have been LSU-Bama in the Sugar (2)
2012-Bama would have been in the Sugar, but would ND have played Bama or K State in the Orange. And would OSU have slipped in even after being on probation ? (3)
2013: AU to the Sugar and FSU to the Orange to Play Baylor or Bama. If they had beaten FSU and AU lost, then maybe he could have won it that year.
2014: Bama in the Sugar and FSU to the Orange to play TCU or Baylor.
2015: Clemson to the Orange to play OU, and Bama to the Sugar to play Iowa or OSU.
2016: Bama to the Sugar to play Penn St or Michigan. (4)
2017: Would not be in conversation.

So, I have it 6 to 4 in Bryant's favor.

I am no Alabama fan but I just can't bring myself to equate anybody with Bear Bryant.

both saban and bryant proved that they could adapt to the changing cfb game. bryant with that new fangled wishbone offense plus integrating his team and saban retooling his signature, huge guy defense to sleeker, faster hybrid type players, extending recruiting nationwide. then, last night, saban pretty much breaks all of his rules, takes out a proven qb and puts a true freshman qb in the championship game.

both had an eye for talent, the knack to develop that talent, the charisma to bring the talent into the program and the ability to change with the game.

Actually, many say Bear was screwed out of a couple. I mean we will never know but had there been a playoff in place, I think Bear would have done just fine. People forget the politics of the old system and Alabama is a mostly rural state and Bama did not command the tv ratings that it does today. They didn't even have number one vs two in the old bowl system. The SEC was not considered the best conference and the system favored Big 10 and Pac 10 teams.

All of them. I'll take "Saban would have won them all." for $4000.

Bear. Saban’s team is driving to win but misses the FG.

Kind of like Jimmy johnson v Jeff Gordon.

Chase made it easier for Jimmy. Playoff makes it easier for Saban. Without bcs or playoff, no 2012 or 2018

The real question is will the job kill him like it did to Bryant or when Alabama has a 9-3 type season, will he be driven out of town with bricks thrown through his window like Curry?
