Overtime needs to be like the NHL. One full period, then shootouts like there currently is.

So what's your opinion on OT? Does he not make a valid point?
My opinion is that NCAA overtime is one trillion times better than that shite they do in the NFL.

Saban on his soapbox again
By soapbox you mean his weekly radio show where he routinely expresses his opinion on a variety of football related subjects.
Your title makes it appear as though he called a press conference just to air this.
But it is good to know you listen when he speaks.

How so?

Any type of overtime with a "golden goal" type format is terrible. Add time on the clock and play a mini-quarter or something if you want to change the system. The NFL style overtime is one of the worst overtimes in sports.

i actually think Holtz has a valid suggestion. Make teams start from the 40 instead of the 25.
Ofcourse that just means Saban would've had to attempt a 71 yard FG in OT

"There would be less emphasis on the coin toss and who plays defense first, Saban said."
"From the 2000 through 2007 regular [NFL] seasons, there have been 124 overtime games. In every single game except one (I believe), the team that won the toss elected to receive. And those receiving teams won 60% of the time (and tied once). That's a relatively large advantage, particularly when compared to home field advantage." LINK

it's not sour grapes. he's been sayin it for years. but i dont remember hearing him say it after the 08 game?

Its good to know he finally lets his feelings be known after what 10+ years of coaching in college since this rule went in? He never mentioned that on his coach's show after we beat UT and Moo U in overtime in 2000.

to complain about not having NFL-style overtime. I wonder what brought that up???
I seem to remember a lot of bitching about the NFL overtime a couple years ago after the Saints vs Vikings NFC Championship game. The Vikings never got to touch the football on offense in OT.

Thats because it was fair then.
Times have changed. Its not fair anymore.

WTF...If you've heard NFL commentators, they'll say they prefer college overtime because its too fricking easy to get in field goal range in the NFL. I wouldn't mind playing an extra few minutes IF (and I stress IF) both teams get a shot on offense. Saban looks like a dipshit fwiw.

Nor, after the 2008 game when Bama beat LSU in TS in OT.

I agree with this. Don't let teams start in FG range. At least make them earn that

That has been changed, now. Each team (in the playoffs) will get one possession at least
