quote:My wife’s uncle was legendary sportswriter Alf Van Hoose. He always spoke highly of Hurt.
When Saban got hired, the first two media members he wanted to speak to in his office were Cecil and Finebaum (before his SEC Network days). Those two controlled so much of the narrative when it came to Alabama football.
Finebaum, not so much.

The guy was truly the heartbeat of Alabama Athletics for 40+ years. When Cecil wrote the "it's done" article, the head coach could go ahead and pack his bags. He was a walking encyclopedia of SEC and College Football and Basketball and as smart, funny and interesting a person as existed in football media. And unlike a lot of today's modern media folks, he truly loved the stories and sports that he covered and loved talking about them.
We used to spend the night in Birmingham on the way back to Tennessee after home games and go to a specific gas station that we knew would have the Tuscaloosa News so we could pick up the paper solely so my dad could read Cecil's Sunday article about the ballgame. Every Sunday. Win or lose, big game or small.
Damn, just really frickin sad.

I was so glad when he wrote the one for Shula. You could tell he hated to do it. But it was (past) time.

So sad, he was such a talented writer. Absolutely hilarious on Twitter too

Sorry to hear that. One of the last real journalist in the State of Alabama. I always thought he was a homer years ago, but that was expected by a hometown paper. Today he would have to alternate positive and negative articles to keep his job. RIP.

I vividly remember waiting for it, knowing it meant that it was over. And like all of them, it wasn't mean or harsh or loud, but it laid it out plain as day and it meant that it time was up and things were about to change.

Absolutely sucks. Now we're left with the likes of Joseph Goodman and his woke arse garbage writing.
RIP Cecil

Gonna miss him. He was good at his job and that's pretty rare these days.

Damn too young. He was a good one. He WAS University of Alabama football and sports reporting.

He always said what we as fans felt.

This was during Muschamp's 7-5 Florida team's absolutely out of the blue upset of Georgia where they ran for 418 yards.

He went by 92D on TiderInsider. Among all the supposed insiders on Alabama football boards, when 92D gave info, you knew it was bona fide.
RIP Cecil

Saban should have chewed Lane’s arse out at the coin toss just for old times’ sake.

Darn. Sad to hear that. Back in the late 1980’s and early 90’s if you wanted the latest news about Alabama recruiting you could call Cecil’s Recruiting Hotline. Jacked up my phone bill every month in the winter up to signing day.
