Rick Barnes: how has he turned it around?

The guy recruited some absolute studs at Texas, and gave that program their best run ever. I always found myself defending him, despite the so-called inability to win the big game. I feel like they did a great job performing at expectations, but rarely exceeding them at Texas.
Those last few teams he had, including one that got to #1 before the bottom fell out, were a roller coaster to watch.
He goes to Tennessee, pretty much labeled as a retread. All of a sudden, that team is loaded. What the hell changed other than the scenery?

Elite coaching at an elite program

There are only two players on the team that were more than 3*s coming out of HS, Pons who averages 16 minutes and Jalen Johnson who averages under 5 minutes a game.
He’s got 2 Naismith caliber players supported by a bunch of very good role players, with Bone and Alexander having NBA potential. It’s probably the most complete squad the programs ever had, well suited to winning shootouts as well as games lingering in the 50s and 60s.

Rick Barnes’ problems at Texas were never non-conference play.
He would change his style of play in conference (slowed it down too much) and didn’t have a whole lot of success in the tournament. It was time for a change in both parties.

He has developed players at an extremely high level. Probably the best strength coach in the country based on what I’ve seen in terms of body development year over year. And Barnes and his staff have gotten every player on the roster better individually year over year as well. Guys like Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield looked like borderline A Sun guys when they got here. You could see potential by the end of their freshman years but they’ve both improved at a level I’ve never seen at Tennessee.
He basically found 7-8 3 stars in his first few classes that all play extremely hard and have good basketball skills but had a glaring deficiency in terms of weight or ball handling or something else that’s correctable. Also a couple guys that hadn’t been playing the game long.
He's now starting to sprinkle 4 and 5 stars in but I don’t think many of them will play significant minutes early except possibly Josiah James next year.
The philosophy was to find a group of guys who he could grow with years 2-3 and then have a team of juniors and seniors who can stay old every year after that.
Almost every recruit he’s signing is a high ceiling project who is expected to redshirt/play minimally in year 1/work in to rotation year 2/get significant minutes by year 3.
You’re seeing it now with guys like Yves Pons and Jalen Johnson in year 2 right now and DJ Burns will likely be that guy next year.
I think it’s the best way to build a roster if you can’t land Duke type talent.

Yeah, those late seasons at Texas became disappointing.
The stretch from ‘02 to the beginning of 2010 was impressive:
02: Sweet 16
03: Final Four
04: Sweet Sixteen
05: 1st round
06: Elite 8
07: 2nd round
08: Elite 8
09: 2nd round
10: 1st round (achieved #1 ranking)
Throw in the NBA players they recruited:
Aldridge
Augustin
Durant
Avery Bradley
PJ Tucker
TJ Ford
...and more

Because he a damn good coach.
The sports scene has gotten too quick triggered firing coaches. U have coaches who win championships, have a down year or two and it's, oh, he's got to go. Sam wyche coached the Bengals to the afc title game a few times and a super bowl. He goes like 7-9 and gets fired. Well, how have the Bengals been since then?
How about Marty schottenheimer with the browns? Anybody remember Jim Leavitt had usf in the top 25 pretty regular. Fired, they've pretty much sucked since. Dale Brown at LSU. Why was he fired? Anybody heard from southern miss since Jeff bower was fired?
Chuck noll, Tom Landry, coach k, John wooden. All would have been fired in today's environment.
Jimmy Johnson went 1-15 and 7-9 his first 2 years at Dallas. He wouldn't get a third year in today's world.
Texas screwed up. This is one of the best 4 or 5 coaches in college basketball.

He's a good coach who focuses on D, and at Tennessee has slowly built things his way.
The UTexas athletic department, alumni-base, boosters and "influencers" are a complete mess. I don't know what it is, but it's really tough for coaches to succeed now at Texas: See Charlie Strong, Shaka Smart and Rick Barnes before he left.
UTexas has a culture problem so I wouldn't blame Barnes for all of that.

UT has the same culture problem when it comes to the boosters. We allowed them to run our AD for the last 15 years as look at all the great decisions: Currie, Dooley, Jones, Tyndall etc. Poor decisions when hiring, and then no leeway to do things the right way, which takes time.
Barnes basically lucked out because the BasketVOLS drastically outperformed expectations last year. If they had finished 13th in SEC, we would be talking about firing him instead of viewing him as a Coach of the Year candidate.
