Rankings need to be fixed

Rankings now (and even before week 4) matter because a #4 team who loses could still possibly be ranked in front of #10 undefeated team.

That -4 doesn't necessarily mean Florida is better than Ole Miss
-A home game in SEC is -3/-4 advantage
-Florida winning on the road the week before
-Let down spot for Ole Miss
Vegas is getting better and better at factoring in all of those than in the past. If this was a playoff game on a neutral field, Ole Miss would be favored by ATLEAST 3 points

Vegas should be doing the rankings. It's their business to get it right, they should know more than anyone. It's not like they can't hypothetically handicap a neutral site game between Florida and Ole Miss. If that was the case, Florida would still be favored by a point or two at least.

We already had a computer algorithm that was supposed to weight multiple metrics and assign an unbiased ranking.
And instead of opening it up for transparency and honest critique, they hid it and kept it mysterious, which made people not trust it.
Now we have people like Heather Dinich telling us who should be ranked where.

It's baffling that college basketball can use an official ranking system like the NET, which is adjusted for opponent strength and game location, and college football just can't seem to figure it out.

I get it but the consensus it represents is much better than a committee of people who mostly have no business deciding these things.

I agree the rankings are shite and do need to be fixed. I don’t think there should be rankings until you’ve had at least 5 games.

I'm ok with that. A better team should be ranked higher than a lesser team. If we're going to stay with subjective, then the best subjective ratings will come from Vegas and that's really undebatable.

Generally I agree with this. But, even after 5 weeks, the rankings, the way it's done now, needs to be fixed.

I agree with you to an extent. But should we really put Ohio State above Texas or LSU above Ole Miss? Because that is what Vegas would do.

Absolutely agree. I personally think the BCS was the most accurate for trying to evaluate everything. Anytime you add the human element it’s going to be skewed one way or the other.

The real baffling thing is how college basketball through trial and error over years now does a pretty good job of judging tournament teams based on quality opponents and rewarding teams that do well in a schedule full of other good teams.
Now they have teams intent on scheduling as tough a schedule as they can.
College football always seems stuck in a weird logic that it's somehow more indicative of quality to beat a bad team 35-17 than to lose a tight 24-21 game to another good one.
