I didn't get into UGA, but I think it had more to do with where I lived in GA than anything. They only take certain amounts from certain areas, my 3.75 and 1220 would have gotten me in if I were from bumblefrick. UGA takes tons of idiots from the middle of nowhere.
Maybe because people in college admissions realize that in Metro Atlanta parents pay a frickton of money to specifically prepare their kids to take standardized tests and write the perfect admissions essay whereas in bumblefrick, GA, a kid can be just as smart with a whole lot fewer resources at his/her disposal.
Whatever, I have attended school at three different prestigious colleges and universities in the Northeast, in the Midwest, and in the South, and I have met and taught brilliant people and dumbasses at each one.
The big Texas schools have a ton of money and the huge population of Texas means their admissions standards can be very tight, thus the high rankings, but they are obviously very good schools as well.
For all that GA people hate Adams, he was one of the first to really try to push UGA into a bigger research orientation which attracts the better graduate professors. Most undergrad classes in big state schools are going to taught by GAs anyway so few UGs will really get a chance to work with the "big names" unless they get a spot in a lab or research group.

Dont we all, but seriously someone has to be last, we're use to it so not hurting on this end
, it just wouldnt be an accurate poll if the MS schools weren't last

I wasn't ragging on MSU/Mississippi, just commenting on Panhandle double posting to call people out (though like I said I was just messing around).
Also, simply the fact that MSU is a US university and Mississippi is a US state gives you all a leg up on about 2/3's of the world.

I have heard one be in top 10% of graduating HS class in order to be accepted to any state school in Texas.
Large population in Texas that only admits top 10% has to contribute to good academic standings.

I think it is that anyone in the top 10% is guaranteed a spot at either Texas, A&M or Tech. I'm sure someone will correct me in short order though.

9. South Carolina
Yeah SC takes a blow for being the state school of not an overly intelligent state.
But there is truth to that, SC has made a very deliberate effort to educate as many of the SC population that meet the standard requirements and want to come to SC. The hope being that most will state in state and in turn the entire state benefits from their education.
I remember a thread a while back on an SC board started by a CU fan that admitted he admired that sort of thing because Clemson had gone away from that. And Clemson isn't afraid to admit that either, admitting to manipulating the system to get a higher ranking in the US News List.
Would I like SC to be super high on this list? Sure. But being where we are doesn't mean we're a bad school academically, after all our number goes up and down on an annual basis and are considered to be a great research institute.

USC is one of only 40 public universities in the nation and the only one in South Carolina to receive the Carnegie Foundation’s highest research designation and to be named among the nation’s leaders in providing programs that benefit and engage communities.
Kiplinger’s Personal Finance ranked the University of South Carolina No. 42 among public universities in the nation in its 2011 list of “Best Values in Public Colleges.” The list recognizes top public universities for their top-flight academics and affordable costs.
The Princeton Review’s “Best Value Colleges for 2012” list recognized USC as one of the 75 best value public universities in the U.S.
USC is home to some of the South’s best doctoral programs, according to a 2010 report from the National Research Council. The University has nine programs that rank among the Top 10 in the South in their respective disciplines; 12 programs are ranked among the nation’s top 50. Top academic programs include electrical, chemical, and mechanical engineering; geography; biological sciences; chemistry; English; comparative literature; history; pharmacy; and philosophy.
The university is ranked among the top up-and-coming national universities according to the U.S. News & World Report 2010 “America’s Best Colleges Guide.”
Yeah I know, I TL'DRed this post but I can't help but defend my school.

My dad can beat up your dad! Its comical that its offseason and we are talking freaking academics.
Memo to UGA folks: no...please dont group your school as an institution on par with UF...when you get membership in the AAU then get back with us.
I used to spend summers in Missisippi as a kid with aunt and uncle and when I was 12...I was talking to my uncle about SEC schools (this was 1959 btw)...cause back then I loved college football...anyway my uncle was a school teacher and he told me" Miss State is where you go to get an education to do an honest days work"..." Ole Miss is where you go if you want to be a lawyer, doctor or some kind of shyster" His words, not mine.
I think Missisippi is a beautiful state, the fishing is great, folks are friendly and the water tastes great from deep wells. I also think Ga is a beautiful place..but dont let those mutts know it cause I like to irritate them.
Love Louisiana and love the food...Bama, Tenn, SC are full of great southern folks who will smile at strangers...we are lucky for those of us in SEC country...just think of having to live in New Yawk, New Jersey or some foreign country like Miami

You really need to get off that AAU high horse. AAU membership is based more off of an institution's ability to research rather than academics. Just because a school is part of the AAU does not automatically make it "superior" to non-AAU schools. Dartmouth College is not an AAU member yet their overall prestige is far greater than both UF and UGA.

Hey, that's a damn beautiful song man. Can Make a grown man cry. And frick Ole Miss; they wish they were rich like us
Talk about these Mizzou guys too. I didn't care about them either way, but then one of them suggested kicking out Vandy AND the Mississippi schools! Not like we all founded this conference or anything... People rag on Mississippi, but Missouri is like everything bad about the south and the rust belt combined, without the positives of either.

Ole Miss & MSU took a hit when the Ayers court case forced them to lower entrance requirement to match the historical black universities in the state. Now the freshman class is larger, but the curriculum is still at the same difficulty level, which leads to a much higher washout rate. Low admissions standards = lower retention rates and both are big factors in these ratings.
This. The numbers are unfairly skewed against us in MS because of the joke that is our judicial system.
engie - it is a joke but I think the Feds did this, not MS. Hopefully not with OM lawyers running our judiciary! Anywho, I'll put OM Docs & Lawyers and MSU engineers against anyone in the world.

This is true, it's any public university though I believe. I think they added a minimum SAT stipulation recently but overall this rule honestly hurts the academic profile of both schools. More top 10% kids go to UT over A&M, but both schools would benefit from just letting in the best students in Texas. You don't receive scholarship money directly from being top 10%, so it's not like it entices kids to go there. For the good high schools in Texas there's a lot of shite high schools that have kids finish in the top 10% that have no business getting into UT or A&M.
