READ THIS FIRST: this thread is not meant to call out, diss on, flame, glorify, prop up, or anything else towards any of the schools. It is purely something I was interested in and decided to share my research.

Thinking behind the rankings: since most college basketball games occur on weeknights, and most people work weekdays from roughly 8/9-5 o'clock, it is likely that most people who live a considerable distance from campus do not see it logical to make the trip for a weeknight basketball game. Therefore, it is mostly up to the metro area around the campus to attend the games. I compared attendance averages over the last 5 years to the metro sizes of the schools to rank them.

Rankings:

1. Mississippi State
Starkville metro: 48,xxx
Attendance avg: 8,xxx
Pct of pop: .167

2. Ole Miss
Oxford metro: 41,000
Attendance avg: 6,5xx
Pct of pop: .159

3. Mizzou
Columbia metro: 176,xxx
Attendance avg: 10,xxx
Pct of pop: .057

4. Alabama
Tuscaloosa metro: 221,5xx
Attendance avg: 11,xxx
Pct of pop: .050

5. UK
Lexington metro: 472,xxx
Attendance avg: 23,xxx
Pct of pop: .049

6. Auburn
Auburn metro: 140,000
Attendance avg: 6,xxx
Pct of pop: .043

7. Texas A&M
College Station metro: 212,xxx
Attendance avg: 9,xxx
Pct of pop: .042

8. Florida
Gainesville metro: 264,xxx
Attendance avg: 10,5xx
Pct of pop: .040

9. Georgia
Athens metro: 192,5xx
Attendance avg: 7,xxx
Pct of pop: .036

10. Arkansas
Fayetteville metro: 463,xxx
Attendance avg: 14,xxx
Pct of pop: .030

11. Tennessee
Knoxville metro: 699,xxx
Attendance avg: 19,xxx
Pct of pop: .028

12. South Carolina
Columbia metro: 800,xxx
Attendance avg: 11,xxx
Pct of pop: .014

13. LSU
Baton Rouge metro: 800,xxx
Attendance avg: 9,xxx
Pct of pop: .011

14. Vanderbilt
Nashville metro: 1,6xx,xxx
Attendance avg: 13,5xx
Pct of pop: .008

Now obviously this is a very flawed system of ranking the attendance figures, the biggest example being Vanderbilt with an attendance of close to 14k per night is ranked 14th because it's in a town of 1.6 million whereas Mississippi State with an attendance of just 8k per night is ranked 1st because its in a town of just 48k. Let the bitching ensue

Taking all of Nashville's population into account hurts them quite a bit in this scale.

Well, what do you expect Kentucky to do... build a 100,000 seat arena?

This is stupid. Arenas can only be so big, even in the larger SEC cities.

It's all clear now. So this is an attempt by a Mizzou fan to make their attendance not middle of the pack in the SEC.

A very flawed attempt.

Pretty much, I used the attendance numbers they used in the OP.

Obviously the ones who were both 9,xxx or 6,xxx can be flipped around.

Our OOC attendance is an embarrassment.

We will sell out or almost sell out our conference games and pack the arena. But it doesn't happen in our OOC games. The seats are sold, but the money guys won't drive in from KC or STL for weekday OOC games.

It's been a complaint for some time. But no one has completely addressed it at the AD.
