No. Both schools would have been independent. USCe was an independent for years before they entered the SEC

Who knows if they had actually left the ACC. Clemson may be in the SEC and South Carolina not.

Don't forget South Carolina didn't leave the ACC and immediately go to the SEC. They left the ACC in 1971 and didn't join the SEC until 1991.

It's certainly not the only reason, but it's definitely a reason as to why our football history is so bad.
