Everyone always talks about how A&M is trying to get out of Texas' shadow but I have often wondered the same about Mizzou.

Mizzou was always one of the bigger of the "Little 6" next to the "Big 2" of OU and Nebraska back in the Big 8 but still a "Little" school without much of a chance. Then as the Big 12 formed that shifted a because of OU going to the South but still Mizzou made progress but never got on NU's level prestige wise. Certainly your rival was always KU but KU cares less about football than Kentucky.

How do you view the SEC move to be able to get away from that perception going forward and do you think it is accurate?

I don't think it nearly matches the level of A&M stepping out of Texas's shadow, particularly with regard to recruiting that in-state talent you guys have, but there are definitely similarities.

In the past, Missouri has had trouble locking down top in-state talent and maintaining the focus of KC and STL due to the abundance of pro teams. There has already been a notable shift - both in locking up the state recruiting and the record number of season tickets sold + stadium expansion plans.

I think longterm it gives Missouri a big leg up over nearby old rivals (kU, Kansas State, Iowa State and even Nebraska) because like A&M, we now have the allure of SEC football while most neighboring programs have the Big 12 and an uncertain future to offer.

It is similar but not near the magnitude of aTm and burnt orange bevo. Rivalries and being overshadowed are 2 different things. We were not overshadowed by uk because frankly basketball does not count. Sure it is nice to be good at it but at the end of the day it is really nothing more than a footnote. Bet most fans would have trouble remembering who played in the Bball finals this year but can name LSU/Bama real quick.
We got overshadowed by the Nubbers/OU and even bevo cause we lost more than we won against those teams.
The move to the SEC at minimum gives us a fresh start. While the competition will be tougher recruiting will be better. The best players want to play against the best players.

I'd say your in the neighborhood of perception about the BigIIX days.

To answer your question simply...I believe we have already started transending away from that old conference. It started by keeping more in-state kids in state. Of coarse we do not have the history that alot of other SEC schools have. But what everyone has to realise, by adding two programs. The success of these two programs can solidify the SEC conference so much, I don't feel anyone can surpass it's success. It power in numbers, it's one team having a down year there will be 13 others with a chance. One is going to be trending up every year. Also if these new schools are successful, it's cudos for the SEC. It could then claim taking teams and turning them into champions, by being in the SEC.
