I don't particularly care for our punt formation where we have 3 large players with little speed serve as protection wall.

If it is such a great advance, why do we not see the same formation on Sunday?

having slower players on a coverage unit creates a mismatch. AU has struggled covering punts from this formation.

Is it related to hashmarks being wider than NFL? Are the punters slower in their process of kicking?

It makes punts harder to block, especially since leaping has been made illegal. Even in a tradition pint formation you’ve likely got a few slow guys out there anyway.

I've seen AU block one and I've seen the punter hit the back of the wall.

Punting seems to change from one personal protector to a wall of 3 with a swinging door to spread punt formation to rugby style.

Yet all the NFL teams look similar.

Yep. Bama got penalized for "Lei Ping" last night against The Moo.

First time I've seen that called.

Can't compare formations because the rules are different in the pros...
In pro ball, only gunners can go downfield before ball is punted, in college everybody can go...that is why colleges do the rugby style punt, to give team time to get downfield...no advantage to do it in pros.

How dare say such when an LSU fan could potentially read it! Are you trying to trigger an entire fan base and make this no longer a safe place?

What I always wanted to see is to use it as a running formation. Put an outstanding punt returner like a Javier Arenas (yeah, I've been wanting it a long time) back to take the snap. Teach him to throw simple screens and to kick the ball 20-25 yards, then go at it.

Depending on the variation of formation, he would have 2-3 waves of blockers, and plenty of room to pick up steam and see the rush before first contact.

Maybe it wouldn't work... but then again...
