While watching Read and React with Cole Cubelic and Roman Harper a couple of weeks ago, they showed film of a team using a spy against a team with a QB who was a good runner (sorry, I can't remember the 2 teams). They showed film of several plays where the QB ran and the spy helped, but showed several plays where the QB did not run, and the spy was basically a guy just standing around. He wasn't in coverage and he wasn't rushing the passer, so basically a wasted defender on those plays (unless it was a straight running play when he could try to tackle the RB).I had never really thought about the spy being useless when the QB didn't run. We'll have to make that decision when we play LSU.

Anyway, what does the Rant think?

Depends on the QB. Using a spy against Milroe is a no brainer, because he can’t read a defense and has no pocket presence. Spy is told to rush when Milroe steps up or rush when he rolls himself outside of the pocket. He won’t throw the ball away, and he’s indecisive when he decides to run.

Too easy.

Dual threats like Daniels who are great at throwing and running? Spies are often useless, IMO.

I felt like Perkins was a good spy against Young last year. He has quick twitch reflexes and was able to react well against Young. You need same level of skill as a spy for a skilled QB. No one on Bamas team is fast like Daniels so I would not spy.

That's why a QB like Daniels is so dangerous. Either way, he can burn you. You drop into coverage without a spy and he can take off. You use a spy and you lose a man in coverage. Spying is great when it works, and it sucks when it doesn't.

Playing man is dangerous because of the defenders backs being turned and the QB can take off. Zone is great because all the linebackers have their eyes on the QB, but if you run zone all day a good OC and QB are going to eat you alive. A TRUE dual threat like Daniels who can run and throw at a high level are nearly impossible to stop, you just have to try to slow them down enough to give your offense a chance to win the game. This is why I'm personally nervous about BAMA playing LSU. I know LSU's defense has struggled, but BAMA's offense makes defenses look really good at times. The BAMA offense has to be on it's A game when playing LSU, because LSU is going to score some points.

You use a spy on a QB like Milroe who doesn't dissect defenses and is fast but isn't very "quick'. He's listed at 220 but is probably closer to 235 or 240.

You don't use a spy on Daniels because he can out run you and is gifted at reading defense so you lose a coverage guy.
I take my chances with him running vs leaving a hole in the secondary.

Depends on the quarterback. Hard to spy a QB like Daniels (don’t know enough about other QBs styles) cause the OL is playing well and it just gives him one less defender out there to pick apart.

A less talented thrower or a team with a weak OL where the QB is forced to scramble more then a spy would be a good call.
