That seems reasonable to me.

Seriously? Remember the people you're talking about. We're crazy Gumps, remember? You guys are on a roll now, and while your team beat us fair and square, when it comes to making a 19 year old back up long snapper wealthy, do you really think your fan base will be able to compete with us?

It is ridiculous. These guys are getting free educations, lodging, and meals. Paying them in my opinion makes them professional athletes. If this is the road we are going to go down, then the NFL needs to start minor league football now. I saw a figure of 10,000 per player mentioned; this will just encourage cheaters to offer even more. I attended LSU using the proceeds of a state guaranteed loan; I repaid every penny with interest. I would have given anything to be on the football team, and I would have expected nothing.

I don't give a shite about who has more fans. It's about what's fair to the kid, shithead. But I guess a Bammer fan like you doesn't think like that.

I don't think they should be paid. I think it would ruin college sports. frick they are getting 1000s to 100,000s now lol

They should get stipends. Approximately $1000-1200 per month.

Teaching assistants get free education plus a stipend. They work approximately 20 hours per week and get a living stipend to boot. Football players put in at least as much time, and they have no time to get a job to earn spending money.

A stipend would not make them professional athletes any more than they make TAs professional teachers.

They get about 50-60k a year at LEAST at major universities worth of stuff, all the free pussy they can handle, and so much academic help its ridiculous.

they're ALREADY getting paid.

Now, if we're talking about family travel costs or maybe the kid isnt getting enough to eat etc those kinds of things should be handled but otherwise hell no they shouldn't get paid more. You fricking kidding me?

I've always wondered how the entire family of a player can attend an away game across the country. Obviously, they paid themselves but, really?

Maybe a free ride to a highly regarded University should be enough?

As I've said before, this isn't enough.

A scholarship doesn't put gas in your car or pay your rent. A stipend would though. A lot of players do get stipends now, but they're very modest, especially when you realize that they basically work full time jobs for the university.

How much money do you think SEC schools make off of football? I think it's fair for the players to get a little something extra (and Hugh Freeze agrees with me on this, for whatever that's worth).

they should absolutely be able to sign stuff for money.

Totally. A lot of people say "well they get to be famous" but then the NCAA puts limits on what they can and can't do with their fame.

What's the point of being famous if you can't profit off of your fame? I guess blowjobs from random 19-year-olds but that's not putting gas in your car.

It's totally doable.

The NCAA could audit autograph sales and use an independent appraiser to determine if certain things were bought or sold for more than what they deem would be fair market value.

This isn't complex shite. Businesses and government have to do this all the time.

I agree 100%

If there were an NFL minor league, then I'd be entirely against paying players anything more than a scholarship because those who want to go pro would have other options. As of right now, the only option these kids have is to play college football.

ETA: There was an article a few months ago in The Economist about the NCAA and this paying players debate, and that was the solution they suggested. They basically argued that baseball prospects can go to the minor leagues, and basketball/soccer prospects can play in Europe, so do something similar for football players. Give them an opportunity to be actual professionals at 18.

Paying via benefits means money goes indirectly to players futures.

Paying via straight cash means money goes indirectly to agents, groupies, lawyers, and assorted remora.
