You are right. He joined the Navy and was a LT Commander of the US ship Uraguay where he served off N Africa. The most note worthy event was his ship being rammed an he defied orders to abandon ship after 200 of the men were killed. Saving the crew. After the publicity of the event the Navy realized they had a former CFB coach in their possession and made him just that, a coach.

There’s a reason why Neyland was a General and Bryant couldn’t beat him.

Maybe it was because he never played against Neyland when he coached at Alabama. Kentucky football and Alabama football were/are two different animals.

Neyland was a hell of a coach. Funny story about an old guy who played for him. Tommy Jumper. He said he was a RB in high school and UT told him he was the only one they were recruiting and put on the dog for him so he signed. Showed up for 1st day of practice and their were 21 running backs! Well over a 100 freshmen. LOL! But an assistant was separating them all by positions and called him to a bigger group of 24 guys...guards! He was shocked and looked up his recruiting coach after practice. The coach looked him in the eye and said "Son, I don't even remember your name. Further don't you say a single word to me for one year except yes sir and no sir and if you are still here after a year I'll learn your name." He (Mr Jumper) told me this story directly.

How can you tell them apart? There are a group of them that all are basically the same.

Wooden was supposed to coach Iowa but a downed telephone pole meant he never got called so he did not think they wanted him. Wound up at UCLA instead.

Neyland was a great Patriot but guess you’ve never heard of Shug Jordan. One of the very few who made all 4 of the great landings during WWII. As a Major in the Army Combat Engineers he landed in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, and Okinawa.

When wounded at Normandy he refused to be relieved until their objective had been taken. One of very few who fought in both theaters of War.

Bryant spent most of his tour as a preflight trainer in North Carolina and Pensacola. He was also coaching football in the Navy. This is why when a reporter told Bryant once he was a great American that Bryant then said no Shug over there was a great American. It’s also why Shug never used War terms when describing football. He had seen it and knew it was a game.

That is a hell of a way to talk about a war veteran.......especially today. I guess trash is going to trash though.

Mississippi State played in San Francisco the night before Pearl Harbor. Most of the entire team enlisted on the spot in San Francisco on December 7 and many never returned home.

WW2 prevented State from rightfully claiming their national championship that year, so Alabama stepped in and claimed it instead.
