Williams-Brice Stadium. #14 MSU vs SCAR. MSU had Smoot Smack and he had talked a lot of smack before the game as usual.

SCAR had Phil Petty at QB but he went down at a critical point late in the game - and our backup was a walk on by the name of Eric Kimmery.

Time was running out. Lou Holtz turned to Eric and asked, "what can you do here Eric?"

Kimmery replied, "I can throw the fade coach."

No time to even warm up ... then, with Smoot in man-up coverage against Jermale Kelly ...

They had a good team that year. Fairly complete. Joe Lee Dunn, who had made a name for himself at SCAR a decade earlier under Joe Morrison with the Fire ant Defense, had MSU's D hitting on all cylinders up until that game. I can't remember how they did after that game but we went on to beat OSUe in the Outback Bowl to complete the biggest turnaround in D1 history.

A lot of Gamecock fans declared that game as the end of the fabled chicken curse that pitchfork Ben Tillman had voodoo'd with 100 years earlier.

It was a bit of a turning point in our history quite honestly.

I expected no less knowing full well from the start that more was an impossibility.

BTW, we did lose to Bama that year but have won three of five since.

And MSU beat Bama that year fairly handedly.

I think MSU was undefeated coming into that game, but ended up losing to LSU, Arkansas and Ole Miss before beating A&M in their bowl game.

That was quite an accomplishment in 2000. Vandy and Ole Miss were the only other teams to pull that feat off.

You've not beaten us since the year before, in 1999.

We'll have to wait and see how this year plays out I suppose.

That was a 4th and 10 play and sealed our 2nd victory over a ranked in the first 4 games following the '98 and '99 seasons where we were a combined 1-21.

It was a big deal and a really memorable experience attending the game.

Agreed. We should have won that game that year. Strange game that was.

But what about the other five since? Nothing much accomplished in any of those either I guess.

Anyways, no biggie.

I remember this game, "I can throw the fade coach."

I may have had money on Miss St. Either that or I had picked State in some kind of a pick em game that I played with friends.

Ah, the 2000 season. Late that season, Mississippi State played Kentucky (when Mumme was still there). It was the classic battle of the great offense versus the great defense...

Featuring the Kentucky offense that got shut out by LSU and the MSU defense that got torched for 45 points by LSU. Yep, good times.

They were a two score favorite that day, -11 if I remember correctly. But we had already beaten UGA earlier when they came in as a big 21 pt fav and I wanna say ranked 4th or 5th with ... what was UGA's QB's name that year? He was older, had played pro baseball. Quincy Carter maybe? I dunno, something like that. But MSU had us worried because we especially respected Joe Lee Dunn and we knew we would not sneak up on them like we had UGA.

It was, as I significant as it may seem to some today, a turning point in our program's history and without it I have no doubt we would not have made it as far as we have today.

Yep, Quincy Carter. Threw 5 picks that night, I believe they were ranked like #9 or somewhere around that. A few bars around 5 Points still have part of the goal post that made it from Willians-Brice down S. Marion to 5 Points.
