9/11 was still fresh on our minds. Mark Richt was in year one of building UGa. David Greene was in the first of what seemed like 12 years at Georgia. Also, Tennessee was still pretty good.
It looked like Travis Stephens stole the win for the Vols, but Greene took the Bulldogs down the field and “crushed their face”. I was never a Larry Munson fan, but his passion is unrivaled.
Other games of note that day:
(2)Florida 44, (18)LSU 15
Auburn 16, Miss St 14
(13)South Carolina 42, Kentucky 6
(3)OU 14, (5)Texas 3 - Roy Williams Superman play
It’s crazy that I remember where I was sitting and watching these games, the specific plays, etc…but can’t even recall plays from a game I attended a couple of weeks ago.

this game changed so much for the fate of both programs.
-We had just lost 9 in a row to Tenn that was snaped the year prior in donnan's swan song before he was fired.
-we hadn't won a game in knoxville since 1980
-Richt was in his 1st year ever as a HC and greene was an unheralded freshman
-UT was still really friggin good, and if not for an seccg upset is in the national championship game that year
We pulled off the miracle though and the series turned on its head. UGA would start to win a bit more than they lost which was new territory, then UGA began to win a shite ton more than they lost. UGA would overtake UT in many major categories (including owingint the series lead now) and tie them for 2nd in all time SEC titles. One program has continued a consistent rise up the CFB hierarchy while the other slowdly descended into the depths of CFB hell.
Lot of stuff going on that day

The end of the 01 season was wild.
Two weeks before the SECCG, it was looking like a Nebraska v OU battle in the Big 12 title game would decide an opponent for Miami in the title game (assuming the Canes would win out, which they did). Nebraska was destroyed by Colorado, and Oklahoma was upset by Okie Lite. This put Florida in the mix to go to the BCS title game. Next week, Tennessee drained the swamp, which meant Texas could beat Colorado in the Big 12 title game and go to Pasadena. The Horns were upset by the Buffs, thus meaning a Tennessee win over LSU in Atlanta the next weekend would send the Vols to play Miami. Matt Mauck happened, Tennessee lost, and we circled back to Nebraska…and that is seemingly the Huskers last hurrah.

And then we crushed a highly ranked Michigan team innour biwl.
I really do think pur players overlooked LSU then like idiots.

The call
quote:
God, 10 seconds. We are on their 6…
Michael Johnson turned around, asked the bench something…and now David Greene makes him line up in the right in the slot. We have three receivers. Tennessee flying what amounts to a 4-4. Fake.
And there is a touchdown! Touchdown, my God a touchdown!
We threw it to him! We threw it to Haynes! We just dumped it with 5 seconds left! My God almighty did you see what he did!
David Greene just straightened up and we snuck the fullback over! Haynes is keeping the ball! Haynes has come running all the way across to the bench.
We just dumped it over, 26-24. We just stepped on their face with a hobnail boot and broke their nose! We just crushed their face!”

I woke up in the 2nd q, and then I got into that game for free in the 3rd q. Good times.

not that they played the game, but UT fans sure did. The Ga Dome was probably 80/20 Tennessee fans. I remember seeing tons of women walking around before the game at the GWCC with orange roses. I don't think Jack and Jill Vol thought LSU would come within 20 points.

and honestly, they had every right to think that way. UT had just beaten what honestly may have been the #2 team in the country in UF and was set to play a team they'd already beaten earlier in the season. Obviously hindsight says you shouldn't take anyone for granted but I can't really fault the UT fans for thinking it was pretty much already in the bag at that point

My God, Larry Munson was terrible. Most overrated announcer in the history of broadcasting.

Do you just wake up every morning thinking how you can "out-douchebag" yourself from the previous day? You are really a terrible poster. Your endless, stupid trolls are just childish.

It was glorious! I was there, waaaay up there on the river side of the stadium, and almost walked out after tenn scored for the last time. Tenn fans were shell shocked and we were crunk!

I was never a fan of his style, but if I was a Georgia fan I’d probably love it. We are all partial to our home announcers.

This was the last season that Tennessee was in the national title hunt. 21 years ago lol.

I was way up in the upper deck too. Tennessee fans started leaving after we got the interception. My section was only about 60-70 percent full by the time the Hobnail Boot happened. Epic win. Pretty shitty season overall.

2001, what a crap year for State. Started the year ranked in the Top 20 and picked to finish first or second in the West by most publications. Then proceeded to go 3-8 with 5 losses by a TD or less. And then it just totally fell apart from there for Jackie. Didn’t really get back to respectability until 2010 with Mullen.

2001 was pure crap for Tuberville. Auburn starts 4-0 in conference including win over #1 Florida and then proceeded to get hammered by Arky only to come back and upset UGA. 5-1 in SEC and just need a win as heavy favorite over Bama at home....and get destroyed. Winner take all game in BR against LSU (9/11 moved game) to go to SECCG and get housed again. No doubt Tennessee plays for natty if AU had not collapsed in the West.

People talk about 2001 as the end of Tennessee and the start of LSU as elite programs. Those things seem true.
The thing that struck me was how a Florida team that good didn't win the conference.
