I'm going to the game in Oxford this weekend with my friend, a guy who used to post on here, and just wanted to hear some reccomendations for Memphis since y'all have some experience there.

Where's some good places to eat, see, etc and also some places to avoid? I wouldn't want to get lost, get my car stolen, or end up looking like a loser (being that I'm from da bayou).

I'm going to avoid the grove on campus since we're gonna be tight on time but we already have parking passes and everything so that's no problem.

I know I troll on here 24/37 but I need y'alls help. Thanks in advance. I promise I won't be wearing any Tigers gear in the stadium. If y'all see a guy that looks like Bill Paxton and looks like a baw please don't lynch him cuz that's me.

to y'all and good luck vs Alabama

BBQ - Central
Fancy food - Flight
Casual dining - anywhere on Overton Square
Going out - overton square / Beale if you're bold
Late night going out - Rayford's Disco

Avoid streets that go North to South. Most streets that go East to West are safe.

Lamar is an East/West street to avoid.

Texas Brazil ... behind The Peabody, short walk to Beale. Stay in lit areas.

Andrew Micheal is the local darling for fancy eatin'; been featured in the NY Times and other big publications. Deep South meets Italian - really good stuff.

Corky's BBQ is pretty good and within a half a mile of AM's - you can have lunch here and have dinner at the fancy place. Tops, Central, and Rendezvous are also popular choices.

Union/Walnut Grove and Poplar are the two main East/West drags that connect East Memphis and Downtown and most of the places you'll want to go to branch from these two main drags. Stay on these streets and you should be okay. When driving on them you'll go past the Liberty Bowl - that is your cue to KEEP DRIVING. Don't stop and ask for directions until you see better neighbors.

Enjoy your stay.

Interstate BBQ, downtown, and The Commissary in Germantown are other good BBQ places. Anyone know if the old pharmacy in the Collierville town square is still open? They had the best milkshakes.
If driving, bring home BBQ sauce, and Pancho's cheese dip.(if live in NOLA, bring me some)

It's so funny to listen to how silly people are when discussing Memphis, Tn on this board. It's almost as if everyone on here was born on a county road on a farm or something.

I agree that sometimes things may be overblown, but someone telling someone to stay in lit areas isn't exactly terrible advice. It beats my advice to go grab a bite in Orange Mound.

Eh, go frick yourself. It's pretty similar to New Orleans. Lots of nice parts, lots of things to do, great food everywhere, live music everywhere. Certainly there are parts to avoid.

Actually Cooper Young fest is all day Saturday, should be a lot of fun. Other than that, Cooper Young/Overton Square/Broad avenue is a lot of fun in midtown. If you are going downtown, I'd recommend going to places on or around Main St as opposed to Beale.
