Bear Bryant is weird in that he's one of those people that never looks exactly the same in any two photographs. I think it's the face that throws me off.

Great pics, SunHog, but that's not Coach Vaught with Frank Broyles.

I wanted to buy this photo for forever for my brother in law. First Auburn-UGA game. At Piedmont Park. It was posted in this thread earlier. Do any of you Dawg or Tiger fans know where I could find it?

It's funny thinking how badly all of these teams would get killed if they played today.

Still more man than most of these players. Terrible nearly useless helmets and pads.

quote:If they played by today's rules, sure. But, suppose you were able to line up a team from the '50s, that played under the single platoon rules, and have them play against today's LSU or Albama team, but using the single platoon rules (limited substitutions, with most players on the field the full 60 minutes). Those 300 pound guys would be useless. I'm sure you could retrain the guys on the current squads to do other tasks (LBs, for example, would become linemen), but it would be interesting to see the process.

One of the best suggestions I have heard for solving college football's problems was one championed by longtime Dallas sports columnist Blackie Sherrod, who suggested going back to single platoon rules. It would get the steriod monsters out of the game, eliminate the college game as a farm system for the NFL, and allow you to get by with a much smaller roster (which would be a real boon for Title IX compliance).

So like rugby?

quote:Yes, but the whole point is that they don't play the same game that was played 50 years ago. I'm sure that if you gave a competent coach a college roster from today, told him he was going have to play a game under single platoon rules, and gave him adequate time to prepare, he could re-task players as necessary and beat that team from the 50s on sheer atheltic talent. But, I'd love to see those big guys try to play 60 minutes--it would wear them out.
