FYI, Emory is a shitty school, it's the 2nd best medical school in GA. They got caught bullshitting their own academic rankings last year... same time all the shite went down in Dekalb.

ETA- they are a first class institution of health and research... own lots of clinics and hospitals... lots a fancy stuff and fancy doctors and such... but as far as a 4-year school, it's shite.

Here's what I see... a post (by we'll call a neutral party) about something with nothing to do with sports. Yet UGA fans trying to make it about that. Funny in itself, but it's a sports forum so I'll discount that and leave it be.

The funny thing to me is the UGA fans who take it head on and try to compare the lives and aptitudes of GT vs UGA graduates. This is more on topic for the video that posted.

And when they do, it's like they're a 4 year old playing superheros in his backyard. "I shot you" says one child to the UGA fan superhero... But the UGA superhero makes up a new power on the spot and out of thin air and declares victory himself. That's like UGA fans and the "Techies have no management skills, we do". Ignore every single indisputable fact as to the career trajectories of each school's graduates (admission requirements, business school rankings, GPAs, salaries) and present something abstract and made up that is based more on a high school jocks vs. nerds mentality than anything applicable in the real world. It's that same high school mentality that makes them UGA leans to begin with

I'll say it now that UGA's a fine school and I very nearly went there. I can also admit that for my field, Emory is better than Tech. Why is it hard for UGA fans to just admit what the real world puts in front of them?

I'll hang up and listen

They swapped their accepted students credentials as their enrolled. Basically, their enrolled freshman class statistics were inflated because a good deal of their highest accepted students (people who got into Ivy league, etc.) didn't enroll, but they presented it as if they had. Swapped the datasets if I recall correctly.

Damn, that's a pretty bush league move for an institution like Emory. Then again, it's a money grab and all about keeping up with the Joneses these days.

Yeah, their rep took a black eye but they're still the best school in the state.

I was accepted there but my family is OT poor so I chose between Tech and UGA. Was set on going to UGA until switching to GT towards the end. Happy I did but would have been happy with Georgia too. Couldn't really go wrong IMO. As a non-Georgia fan growing up in Georgia, I was always thrilled to pull against them just because you're surrounded. Some people take to the bandwagon and pulling for the teams their friends pull for, and some like to see them lose.

As far as the GT wanting to beat UGA more than anything, I would say that's probably true. I would argue the people who reference fans wanting UGA to lose more than GT to win on any other given Saturday don't have a real grip on reality... but I'm sure there are Tech fans who have said that, but not even close to enough for the broad generalizations in this thread. And I see them saying that more as hyperbole to convey how much they hate UGA as a rival.

There's a lot UGA fans take for granted, and I have a unique perspective on it because of my own Auburn & SEC ties. GT for some time has been a middle-to-top-1/3 team in a very underwhelming conference. A conference stocked with a bunch of has-beens, many of which have had time as blue-chip programs, but have collectively been underwhelming since the SEC skyrocketed into the top spot. There's a glass ceiling in the ACC, because besides probably being underwhelming yourself, the teams around you are so boring to watch that no one around the country gives a shite about who wins, and it's not at the front of anyone's minds that an ACC team could breach into the BCS NCG.

Put Tech in the SEC and I think their goals become exactly what you'd expect from any team. Of course I know you laugh at that, but I'm merely using the hypothetical to illustrate my point that circumstances matter.

How do you think your college experience would have been different? Social life, major of study, etc...

Just curious

Major would have been the same or similar.

Social life? I can only speculate. I wouldn't have made cooler friends at UGA than I did at GT. The bar scene and campus feel would have been the only difference to me, and those definitely have their worth. But I had some advantages that someone in a college town wouldn't have had.

Sure there were the stereotypes walking around campus, but there are enough cool people who would fit right in at any SEC campus that I really can't take the blanket nerds tag seriously. Reading boards like this you'd think that Athens was nothing but alpha males and dime pieces , but that isn't the case either.

Several programs out there are gaming the system.

Some programs accept students but list the ones below certain scores as "provisional" even though they are regular students because they come off probation the next semester.

Purdue has took a dump as far as quality of its program the last few years. They were giving away free itunes downloads if you apply to Purdue and are denied. What this allows them to do is get a lot of applicants that had no chance of getting in to make their acceptance rates appear tougher than they are. Not just Purdue doing this.

The School rankings are crap and have been for a long time.

My problem with GT is when I visited years ago the profs acted like they were doing you a favor by speaking to you. The guy over the GTREP program at Southern was scum of a human being.

I think a poster hit the nail on the head when he said that they (Tech) have tons from out of state and out of country. When Tech promotes, they promote academics and not sports. I EASILY remember when their stadium seated something like 40-45,000 and they could not even come close to filling it up. Shoot, I had a buddy of mine call me up and said he had 4 tickets to a Tech vs. Wake Forest game. So, 4 of us jumped in a car and headed to the game. We got to talking and found out all 4 of us were Georgia fans. The stadium was 1/3 empty. It was a good game, and I THINK Tech won.

As I said, it has been awhile since I saw rankings or even cared about them. But, really, as good as Tech is in Engineering, how good are they in the other disciplines?

Yeah. Kind of like an Auburn fan saying they are just as good as Alabama, huh?

Techwood? (Sorry, I couldn't resist)

Seriously, my daughter, who was in the Georgia Honors program, had a best friend that went to Tech. He was ok. A LITTLE socially awkward, but a good guy. Or, maybe he really wasn't socially awkward at all. He was a college kid talking to an adult. A LOT of college kids struggle to talk to adults....from not having a lot in common.

there's no reason that Tech can't be as relevant in Georgia as Clemson is in SC, or FSU is in Florida

Sure there is. Clemson and FSU are college towns where girls and good times are plentiful. They both have 'SEC' type vibes about them. They also have somewhat tradition rich football histories (I mean after the 1920s, for those wanting to tell me all about what tech did when teams still traveled by train), especially FSU starting in the 90s. FSU/UF and CU/SC share a state, and although there are certainly differences, there are also a lot of similarities.

None of what I said above applies to UGA/GT. The campuses could not be any more different. One is the quintessential college town while one is a major metropolis riddled with gangs, crimes, and vagrants. One actually has what you'd think of as a "campus", while the other is in the middle of downtown and next to a major United States interstate. UGA has far more tradition and success on the football field than tech does, and has done well in most decades of our program. And as mentioned, tech just attracts different people. With FSU/UF and CU/SC, you can say that generally, it's the same type of people wanting to go to both (yes, I know..clemson is more redneck than SC..but in GENERAL it's mostly the same folks). That's not the case with GT and UGA. We do give them shite but as mentioned they are a very good school. And as such, they attract a very low amount of females (compared to males) and a very high amount of foreigners. A good looking white female on tech's campus is probably like an oasis. Whereas UGA attracts more "normal" folks (and very smart ones at that, as entrance stats will show).

I know this was long winded but to refute your point yes, there is a reason why tech can't and won't be as relevant in the state as UGA.
