Since players can be paid, I was just wondering if this will now become a way of cheating the 85 scholly limit. If your roster is full but you really want another couple of guys, you can have them sign as PWOs and pay for their school through NIL (with extra cash on top of that if you want). They would have all the perks of a scholly player but not count against the 85.

Is there anything that can stop this?

Yes it has been happening since NIL was legal. All of UGA's walk ons get enough NIL to cover their tuition. I'm sure everyone else is doing it too. This was predicted by many, including myself, as soon as this NIL shite was being debated.

The NCAA could make a rule against it, but then they'd just get sued and have to allow it by a judge.

There used to be rules like walkons not being allowed to eat at the training table that kept the walkon program from being used as a way to stash high quality players.

Not sure if they are still in effect since the NCAA has been neutered and CFB has largely thrown away any rules about paying players.

I hope our PWO, “The Gentry” is getting NIL.

He could market all sorts of products.

There is a maximum roster number. I believe its 115. So only a few extra players can be stashed. But expect the programs with large NIL budgets to be paying the "Non-Scholarship" players enough to equal a traditional athletic scholarship

Since this is now pro football, who even wants an 85 man roster?

At UGA, the walkons eat with everyone else but have to pay out of pocket at the cash register instead of just getting your food and sitting down. So that rule still exists. There was a story this year about one of our lucrative NIL recipients hearing this for the first time and then bought meal plans for all the walk ons so they wouldn't have to pay for lunch.

Because of turnover; the longest you can keep a guy is 5 years and that is becoming rarer. You have to stockpile players in your pipeline, stratified across ages and position groups, and account for attrition. That's why you need 85 as opposed to the 52 or whatever it is in the NFL.

UGA has been using this since NIL started. UGA doesn't have top end NIL deals as high as other schools, but they regularly have 95 or more players getting NIL on the football team, with the amounts enough to pay tuition and have a little left over for the walk-ons. Dan Jackson had his school paid that way before eventually getting a scholarship.

Makes sense. Thanks for the story.
