It’s dumb, but they’re desperate to keep his name attached to the program as long as possible. At least when they go 6-6 this season, the fans can look at the field name and get those warm fuzzy feelings again.
I would’ve figured they’d name the field after their other hero, Harvey Updyke (to honor the fact that there are no trees growing on the field), but I heard they’re just going to put up a statue of him with a gallon jug of tree poison outside the stadium. Very on-brand for the tide.
