I was trying to do some digging just killing time, and Gates as the opportunity to be the first HC to win a NCAAT game while first year in the SEC. This is since expansion. Calipari did it, and I believe the one before that was Trent Johnson at LSU. Am I missing anyone?

You mean since expansion 2.0. Both Calipari and Johnson were since expansion.

John Pelphrey did it. Only time he made the tournament here.

Musselman did it in his first eligible season. He’s made the tourney every year he’s been here so far but the first year was cancelled due to Covid.

We also won the 2020 SEC Championship over Vanderbilt.

Didn’t realize he had been there so long. One of those names that intuitively comes across as a job hopper, but I guess he found roots in the bluegrass.

Statistically Chris Beard has a good shot to do it next year if he makes it to the tournament in year 1. He has a 5-0 record in first round games as a head coach.

So it’s happened a few times before yet you act like he would be doing something unique to the conference. He would be the first Mizzou coach to win a tournament game in his first year while Mizzou competes in the SEC.

You won a first round game vs vandy before everything shut down. Arkansas was not a NCAAT team unless they ran the table in the SECT which was not likely.

That's why I said since expansion and Mizzou competing in the SEC

Bruce Pearl did it with Tennessee too

I don't think it means a whole lot in the grand scheme of coaching hires for program success. It just doesn't happen often. Otzelberger did it last year with Iowa St.

Well, even though he had coached at another SEC school, Tubby Smith in his first year at the University of Kentucky (97-98) won the National Title.

I know you said 'since expansion' but Don DeVoe at Tennessee in 1978-1979 not only won an NCAA-T in his first year, that win was the Vols' first NCAA Tournament win.

Joe B. Hall won an NCAA-T game in his first year 50 years ago today beating Fly Williams and Austin Peay.

So it’s Mizzou specific and only two other coaches had the opportunity to do what hasn’t yet been don’t but might be?

What are you talking about? It's not Mizzou specific at all, the entire SEC outside of Kentucky has made coaching changes since the expansion when Mizzou and TA&M joined. Yes, Gates has a chance to do something that hasn't been done in the current configuration of the conference.

Expanding the conference has no affect on this so that doesn’t matter and it’s a useless observation. This really is a Mizzou our A&M specific thing. Milestones don’t get reset when you add or lose teams. If my team had a 1st year head coach win a tournament game when the conference only had 12 teams, why would I make a point to acknowledged a coach being the first coach to win a tournament game in his first year when the conference has 14 teams?

Pelphrey did it at Arkansas, then promptly followed that up with a 2-14 SEC season.

Muss did it. Calipari did it. Tubby Smith did it. Bruce Pearl did it. Sure there are more if I cared more.
