Are you including Alabama's 1987 appearance which was "vacated for cheating"?

Yep. LSU has a great basketball history but for some reason the LSU fanbase abandoned the program in the early 2000s.

That's news to me. Even though I was in the 6th grade at the time I remember that season vividly and don't recall any hint of NCAA violations surrounding the season so you're going to have to help me out. Alabama basketball has never lost a scholarship, vacated wins or games, or had a postseason ban of any kind in the program's history that I'm aware of.

Alabama won the regular season SEC championship in 1987 and lost as a #2 seed to eventual Final 4 participant Providence (Billy Donovan starred on that team btw). That was one of Alabama's best ever teams that should have gotten to the Final 4 if not for a red hot shooting Providence team that year. Alabama had the perfect setup that year playing in the Sweet 16 regional in Birmingham.

The LSU administration abandoned the program in the late 90s, opting for bargain-basement hire John Brady instead of a bigger name to replace legend Dale Brown. It would have been hard to attract a big name because of impending probation, and if it's hard, why try, right?
LSU fans didn't stop supporting LSU basketball until MANY years of consistently bad performances and absolute lack of any concern on the part of the administration about building a successful program.

We're #3 in tournament appearances (before adding Mizzou), #2 in all-time SEC titles, tied for #3 in Final Four appearances, and I think #4 in all-time NCAA tournament wins. LSU has historically been right around the top of the group of SEC teams looking up at Kentucky.

I don't know what the sanctions were, but wasn't it a prior basketball infractions case that made the football case in 1995 or so more severe?

I've followed Alabama basketball almost as closely as Alabama football since I was a kid and that is literally the first reference I've ever seen regarding this. It has to be that one of the teams we played had to vacate because I've literally never heard of a hint of any NCAA issues with that season or point in time. It isn't referenced on all the teams noted for vacated wins either on this link.

We suck. At least USCe and Auburn won't get any farther ahead of us this year

Close, but you're thinking of an incident around 1997ish involving an Alabama assistant who tried to solicit payment to a recruit that 2 Alabama boosters turned into Alabama compliance. The assistant was fired, no money changed hands, and the NCAA actually praised us for the handling of the matter. They did however decide to extend the general probation window that was almost up from the Langham case. The NCAA later used the window extension to nail us in the Mean matter. The basketball incident resulted in zero actual penalties. Nothing at all was done to the basketball program other than the extension of "probation" that is over an entire athletic department when a program gets hit with a major violation as the football program did in 1995.

Mississippi State should have 3 more Tourney appearances and Kentucky 3 fewer. We won the SEC title in 1959, 1961, and 1962 but werent allowed to play in the tournament due to our racist governor who forbid any team from Mississippi to play against an integrated team.
We snuck out of the state in 1963 defying the Gocernor and played in the tournament anyway after winning our 4th sec title in 5 years.

how could a program be so shitty that it can't muster up 20 appearances in the NCAA tournament. anyone outside of the top 4 should be ashamed.
