A couple of the reasons the NCAA Basketball tourney is so exciting is the number of teams of course, but also the chance to have that Cinderella team bust out and go on a run. That is exciting and fun to watch and follow. Makes the tourney great.

It is impossible for the 4 team football tourney to have this. We have the same set of teams every year. I don't think I'm alone when I say it has grown stale already.

I want to see it go to 8 teams so maybe it could include an outlier who could become that Cinderella.

Imagine if the tourney was 8 teams and we went off the rankings now.

You could have teams like Penn State, Boise State, hell even an SMU in there with the boring regulars.

Now I know football and basketball are two completely different beasts when it comes to a lesser team being able to take out a better team. Much harder in football. But you never know.

Ask Georgia.

Quit melting all over the board and get a new coach.

Because they are the best teams. No such thing as a cinderella in football.

They would just get dragged.

*Good day Dan. Please don't start another thread.

Did you miss the very first year when #4 Ohio State upset #1 Bama using their third string QB who had only one previous start?

I wouldn't mind expanded competition either, but I would be surprised if the NCAA approves a 16-game season for the NC team and the runner-up (assuming both teams go to their conference championship game). 16 is a lot for college players, especially when you factor in the 3 to 4 week-long break they have between games in December.

An 8-team playoff suggests another selection challenge; let's say you have an oddball G5 team like UCF a couple years ago who won their conference and went undefeated. Do you admit them to the 8-game playoff, or do you let a top-tier Power 5 team in instead who finished around 7th or 8th in the nation?

I would imagine the public outcry about certain teams being selected or not selected based on the polling would be even worse if there was an 8-team playoff. Imagine the bitching from other conferences if 3 or 4 SEC teams are let in.

A true playoff would include the champions of every FBS conference. 10 conferences, 10 bids + 2 at large. Leaves room for the NDs and Alabamas of the world.

12 team setup like the NFL. Top four get a bye. Reward for their excellent season.

That's actually a pretty reasonable solution. Would preserve the importance of the regular season and reward those at top with a bye.

It would Water down the regular season too much. 4 is fine. More than fine.

I wish you could have a normal conversation about football.

Agree. The less college football is like the NFL, the happier I am.

15 games isnt asking for too much out of just 8 teams. The double bye through the season is nice.

If it went to this, I feel like this would force teams to only play one FCS school per season. May need to add more FBS schools?

Auburn fans have to do something to compensate for big brother.

Horrible. So last year a five loss Northern Illinois would have made the playoff but not a two loss Michigan. That is just dumb

Imagine this.

Auburn gets into an eight team playoff. As a 2 seed.

In the number 8 slot sits...lets say Boise State. Theyve won all their games but it was horribly sloppy.

Now lets say they win the playoff games off Auburn 2013 vs Georgia type shite. Finish every game with 200 yards less than the opponent with ridiculous lucky plays.

And then they beat Auburn on a pass that deflects off two helmets into the endzone.

Would you be happy? Football is 40% luck but a cinderella story in football is almost entirely built on luck .

Any team outside of the top 4 and sometimes even the top 3 gets blown out. Every year. You would need insane luck to win as a UCF or someone of that caliber.

Its a situation where you know the better team lost . id rather see skill on skill than some controversial shite all offseason.

Subtle troll on PSU. I like it. I'm guessing this was the point of the thread?

It's exciting to watch but horrible for ensuring that the champion is actually the year-round best team. A playoff should have as few teams in it while not eliminating any reasonable contenders for the title of best team. Some 20-10 regular season team making a run and winning a title is great TV but a horrible record for a champion to have.

I don't actually mind an eight team playoff but I also suspect you won't see what you're hoping to see. Eight is still a hell of a cutoff for a Cinderella to make.

I agree with going to 8 teams but disagree on the Cinderella. Those small schools could never win a 8 team playoff in football. I think an 8 team playoff does allow for new teams to make the playoff every year.
