I'm curious how Mullen got this rep as an ingame savant. It seems like his biggest strength is developing and maximizing talent, e.g. Dak Prescott and Nick Fitzgerald who were lightly recruited as QBs and now Kyle Trask. From my recollection his MSU teams often looked completely out-schemed in a number of "big games" (2014-15 Egg Bowls and Orange Bowl vs GT come to mind).

I'll give him a pass for the last two games against UGA due to huge talent disparity, but what justifies some people's confidence in him starting to beat UGA even with a more narrow talent disadvantage?

Because trolling UGA is the fad on the rant these days. That's why there are actually idiots on here trying to convince everyone that Tennessee is going to be able to beat UGA this year.

It's just a narrative created by the media mostly.
I do think he's a good coach, he has turned the program around fairly quickly. Nothing wrong with a 10-3 and 11-2 record. He just needs to take the next step, and beat UGA, and win the east next season.

I think Grantham is the weak in game coach.

I agree, he is definitely a "plus" coach; just needs a few more big game wins to justify the rep as Meyer 2.0 imo

I don't know anyone who thinks this.

Because in that 14-15 season he had the perineal basement dwelling MSU in the damned playoff rankings. None of his teams were super talented, none of them had freakshows at every level.

He may not be the best in game coach, but he’s certainly not a bad one like you’re trying to imply. He’s teams were less talented then everyone save Arkansas in the weat year in and out and yet they were a damn tough out. That’s why

Is it really that difficult to out coach Kirby Smart?

He is a good coach, but the idea of him as an amazing gameday coach is wildly overblown.

Biggest game of his season, and here's what happened.
Wrong wrist bands for play calls

But yea, that dumbass Kirby Smart is the horrible gameday coach for sure. How else do you explain his 3-0 record vs. the hunchback?

But MSU wasn't very competitive in those two egg bowls. Certainly Freeze had the talent advantage, but did Paul Johnson and GT?

From an LSU fan perspective, I watched Mullen blowout LSU in Starkville and then beat LSU again in the Swamp. Then Florida played a hell of game in Baton Rouge this past season.

Georgia and Kirby Smart had zero answers on game day against LSU in 2018 and 2019.

MuLLLen ran an entire series, to include a questionable call to go for it on 4th down against UGA, when his entire team had on the wrong wrist bands. Gameday coach.

Mullen is not the best recruiter, nor the best at motivating, but schematically he’s the best. Won’t be long before he has Florida as a playoff participant.

Mullen is definitely a better X’s & O’s coach than Smart. Georgia just has the money bags and more talent to choose from. Less competition coming in to steal recruits like Florida has. You put Mullen in Athens, the dawgs would’ve won a title by now.

Mullen's offense always gave Aranda trouble, which is odd bc it seems like the tite front would be ideal against it

Say what you will about Igor, but he had Aranda's number.

You want to explain to me, then, why Kirby is 3-0 against Mullen head to head?

No he doesn't lmao. Everyone recruits GA hard. Think of all the great players Clemson has gotten from there.
