They were lucky to even be in the BCSNC -- recall in the UT/OU game that year they knocked Sam Bradford out in the 1st quarter, and then feasted on deer-in-the-headlights Landry Jones for the rest of the game. Held onto that one 16-13.
The Big XII's worst single year nationally was 2009. Only Texas, Nebraska (whom they beat on a controversial, last-second FG in the BXIICG), and Texas Tech (#23) ended the season ranked.
They were who we thought they were.

I think it has to do level of competition. If A&M were in B12 OU probably would have been there most difficult D. Instead, by the time of the Cotton Bowl, A&M had already faced 3 defenses that much faster, stronger and better. And other D's that were probably just as good as OU. I imagine JFF was thinking "after hauling arse from LSU, UA and UF...this is a cakewalk"
