Yeah the iceberg runs real deep for the Carolina-Clemson rivalry, touching on in state regional differences, reconstruction era politics, etc.

There’s definitely an argument to be made that it’s the school rivalry with the most bad blood (though most of it in the distant past). But I don’t think football is really the source of the rivalry.

Ole Miss and Arkansas is more of a rivalry than Arkansas and Missouri.

Bitter is not the word I use to discuss sports rivalries. Bitter leaves a bad taste in your mouth like a bad beer.

Texas-OU is intense; Your hair stands up like a rabid dog. You have your fists clenched watching a football game.

I think in state rivalries and out of state rivalries are different. In state rivalries are intense because they are more like family feuds and every one of them has the same basic dynamic. Flag vs. Ag. It's just a matter of degree of intensity. There are some that are more town vs. town (Arizona-Arizona State). And of course in some cases it is an in town rivalry (USC-UCLA/Stanford-Cal) and some private public spats (Tennessee-Vandy).

Out of state rivalries are way more nuanced because the rivalries might have totally different dynamics from each other.

For instance, the Missouri-Kansas and Oklahoma Texas are really state vs. state rivalries as much as anything else. MU-KU is based on history. OU-Texas is based on cultural perception between the two states. Same with with the rivalry between Washington and Oregon. tOSU vs Michigan is based on some of both. And some of those in the Big 10 are just about those stupid trophies they have.

Some of the SEC out of state rivalries are based on proximity more than anything else and they evolved into traditional rivalries.

Miami vs FSU

They get together and talk about how much they hate the Gators.
