No. Its just a measuring stick for the haves and the have nots of the academic world.
Sorry.
I hear UGA is working towards AAU membership. Goodluck.

Its like when cops give those plastic sheriff badges to kids and they run around and think they are important. The pretend badge is meaningless, but to the ignorant kid, he thinks it means everything. Not his fault, he doesn't know any better

you think Wash U is academically equal to UGA
That's gotta be a troll, that's the only explanation for it.

Meh. Its crazy to think that being a member of the AAU doesn't improve a University as a whole. I fully expect someone who attends a University that is not a member to feel defensive. I just hope come baseball season you wont have the same jealous reaction to our BB national championship.

Newsflash: no one gives a shite about the AAU
It's about research, nothing more. Just look at their motto:
Some schools actually focus on teaching, others focus on research. To each their own but for my tuition money, I'd rather be at a "teaching" college instead of one who only uses tuition $$ to pump out papers and journals. I think that is private industry's role to be honest

If he is that stupid to really think that, then he probably is not a student at WUSTL

So, getting money from the federal government = academic excellence?
This puzzles and concerns me.
When our federal government inevitably implodes, and the dust settles, the best universities will be standing on their own two feet without help from Big Brother.

Care to address the actual points brought up in my post?
ETA: I know that would be a violation of the new rant rules for MU posters. No real discussion allowed, if posters bring up valid points, just ignore them

You are angry.
Only a fool would separate the two missions a world class University embarks upon. Both these give to the University as a whole and allow them to become better in both areas. One of the marked and noticeable areas is in which the research helps the teaching aspect is in quality of faculty.

I'm not saying research universities are useless, but there comes a point when "professors" become "researchers who just so happen to teach on the side" at the expense of the students and teaching
I believe a university should have a balance. If that means that my University has a little less alphabet soup after its name, so be it. I know employers know what AAU means and what it doesn't, even if you don't.

Missouri's AAU status mattered to the administrators at your University when considering them for membership.
You can feel free to knock the AAU all you want. It kind of makes you look a little silly porker.
