Virginia was the heart of the Confederacy. No one who grew up Southern thinks it’s Northern. I think you’ve been in California too long

I was just back there this past February and March. When I was at UGA, a lot of people felt VA was northern. Yes. Really. That was back when the South was still the real South. Today, the South is so much like the rest of the country.

You're just a youngin' so you wouldn't know these things.

You are a very interesting individual. We should grab a drink next time I’m in Athens. I want to see if my mental picture of your as a “true southerner” is accurate.

I was born in Atlanta. Educated there and in Athens. My ancestors have lived in Georgia since 1785 on my fathers side and since the early 1800s on my mothers. I’m told I have a Southern drawl. I attended my first UGA game before I could walk and have missed very few since. I love Georgia and after traveling to many states and a handful of other countries I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. Guess that qualifies me as Southern

Just fyi....

Officially, the U.S. Census describes the following states as being in the South.

The U.S. Census Bureau identifies 16 states as part of the American South, and these states are divided into three smaller regions.....

The South Atlantic includes Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Delaware. Now, I don't think West Virginia is Southern at all!! They're YANKEES! And, Delaware???? Shoot, them and Maryland are as Yankee as can be, I don't care what Mason Dixon thinks in this case.

The East South Central region is composed of Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee.

The West South Central region includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.

I read where Midwesterners are not sure what states comprise their part of the country, either. Poor Missouri...they're located in the spot that seems to tug toward the Midwest on one end and the South on the other. But, they were part of the Confederacy and wuz Rebels!

It really doesn’t matter what the census says . We are talking about perceptions here. No true Southerner believes that Missouri is Southern. I guess i thought of them as Midwestern if I thought about them at all. And as to Virginia being Northern - get real.

Actually, Missouri has a strong Southern Heritage. The Civil War almost got restarted there, and many people there would be very much pro-south.

Just because ignorant people from Georgia don’t know their history, doesn’t mean Missouri doesn’t have a Southern Heritage.

It is more about football recruiting everywhere. Boosters can be very creative paying athletes to come to their school. We are in the infancy stage of what is to come.

I know my history pal. History was my minor and I did quite well. Especially on things having to do with the South
And as I said in another post I’ve been to Missouri twice for football games - and once as a child. Sure didn’t feel southern to me

Western. Being a southern sympathizer didn’t make him a southerner. If that is all it takes. my Yankee aunt by marriage who was born and raised and lives in NY would be Southern too as she fell in love with the South the first time she visited. Takes her vacations here every year and sent her kids to grandmas house every summer so they could learn southern manners. She’s a sweet lady and would be a credit to our part of the world but she is no more southern than Jessie James was

Well I see this thread was derailed. We’ve done the “is Missouri Southern” topic ad nauseum around here. I see it’s as productive now as it was a decade ago.

As far as I’m concerned there is nothing to discuss any longer. Missouri is NOT Southern. Never has been and never will be. They sure want to be though.

Part, in fact probably most of the state is not southern, that’s true. KC is thoroughly western and I wouldn’t say it has much in common with the Deep South. But to say that all of Missouri is not southern demonstrates your own ignorance. The southeastern quadrant of the state is definitely southern. And St. Louis reminds me the most of New Orleans of any city in the country.

But I really don’t care what you think about Missouri in terms of whether it’s southern, you don’t need to lie about having been to Columbia and our fans being “drunken rednecks” because that is not true. I can always tell when folks who post here have actually been to a game in Columbia because more accurate criticisms are that we are “too nice”, the game atmosphere is underwhelming, or that our tailgate scene is not up to SEC standards.
