Here is the wording that would appear on the ballot:

quote:

Initiative # 37 would amend the Mississippi Constitution to require “Colonel Reb”, in his traditional costumed appearance, to be visible as an active mascot on the sidelines of University of Mississippi athletic events. “Colonel Reb” would be required to be included on every University of Mississippi logo, university athletic uniform and helmet, on every university internet page, on every university yearbook cover and title page, on every university letterhead, and on other specified university publications.

They want him on everything.

Why should Ole Miss or the State of Mississippi honor your heritage? Why do people think that argument holds water?

Ole Miss doens't owe it to YOU or anybody else to honor anybody's heritage. Deal with it.

Terrible comparison. Ole Miss' changes have been interally generated.

The Rebel doesn't hurt anybody, and it's tradition.

He Colonel first appeared in the stands in like the late 1970's or early 1980's - it's not exactly a time honored "tradition" like many want to think it is.

And it hurts the university. Despite what people want to think, the Old South imagery that Ole Miss used to cling on to really did hurt with securing donations, recruiting students (not just student athletes), hiring professors, and so forth.

quote:

I attribute that to the Rebel not being attached to their school anymore. The Bears? I don't know what I can say.

The sports teams are still known as the "Rebels," so aside from the mascot I don't see what you're getting at here.

Just let me know what I can do to help.

You can shut the frick up, for starters.

As a proud supporter of LSU athletics, I want to encourage Ole Miss fans to fight to retain every piece of their confederate imagery.

State fans must touch themselves every time they hear about Ole Miss going to the mat for something like this.

I will admit I was upset initially when they removed Colonel Reb, but it is time for us to move on. This is an unneeded distraction, and really has no place in the 21st century IMO.

This could have been avoided if Ole Miss had manned up and named Admiral Ackbar as the Rebel Leader.

You'd think that, but there are very many State fans (and LSU, and Arkansas, and Tennessee, and so forth) who also harp on the "HURR DURR HAIRTIGE AND TERDISHUN" bullshite as well.

You've got the right idea, though. When talking to an LSU friend of mine, who was all like "man Ole Miss is selling out" or some shite, I said "well then why don't you let LSU be the posterboy for the Southern 'tradition' you love so much? Why don't y'all play Dixie and wave Confederate flags? You know, if it's a tradition that doesn't hurt nobody, right?"

That shut him the frick up.

We're everybody's whipping boy with the racist bullshite, and as soon as we try to change that people bitch further about how we're selling out the South. frick that, and frick y'all. We don't owe you fricking idiots a goddamned thing. Suck my dick.

(That last part is not directed at you, Prodigal Tiger, but people in general. You're cool by me.)

Sure they have, only because outside political forces and turrible football coaches you guys hire tell y'all that no black athletes want to come play for y'all. Which is a bold face lie. They're not coming to play for y'all for the mascot name. Keep telling yourself it is to increase the image of your university. Whatever. It's for football purposes first and foremost.

And since you bring up you still have the title of the name Rebel for the school, and that's about as stupid as you are. Do you ever step back and look at how retarded it is to watch that game vs BYU on Saturday and hear the announcers say Rebels while there are kids on the sideline taking pics with Bubbles the Bear. It's stupid. Keep one or the other.

Ole Miss, (excuse me b/c we shouldn't say that anymore either b/c it tarnishes your great image), University of Mississippi can go straight to Hell as far as I'm concerned. And you can undwedge that stick outta your crack bc I'll vote y'all keep it. If for nothing else, just to hurt your tiny wittle feewings.

Another thing: Why don't you quit crying like a girl on a message board about it and contact Hosemann and tell him to STFU? He's the one starting the initiative.

ETA: so you guys honestly believe SEC schools recruit against y'all using racist tactics? If they do and you got proof, then I will back off. But any halfway decent FB coach can dig up racist crap up on any school in the SEC. I was ok with y'all getting rid of the conf flag in the stadiums. Hell, LSU fans have purple/gold ones. It's their right to do so, and coaches can and probably have negatively recruited against them. But why aren't our classes bottoming out? Bc you win and it takes care of itself.

Nope and nope.

First of all, which outside forces are you talking about? Name some? You're recounting the story you've been told, as opposed to what is actually the case.

Oh, and the whole "I can't recruit good black athletes" came from Tommy Tuberville, who I wouldn't call a "turrible football coach" whatsoever. Also, he was right. The Confederate Flag, Dixie, etc. were commonly employed to recruit against Ole Miss, ESPECIALLY by Jackie Sherrill.

You can plug your ears all you want. It's not about football first and foremost. You're free to believe whatever you want, but I'm telling you right now that SO much of it has to do with the school.

Did you know that Phi Beta Kappa told Chancellor Khayat that they wouldn't charter a chapter at Ole Miss until they got rid of the Confederate flags? That's a true story, bro, whether or you like it or not. Then you look at all the huge donations Ole Miss has gotten over the past fifteen years or so and ask "could this have happened with 'Dixie Week' and all that other Old South shite going on"?

quote:

Do you ever step back and look at how retarded it is to watch that game vs BYU on Saturday and hear the announcers say Rebels while there are kids on the sideline taking pics with Bubbles the Bear. It's stupid. Keep one or the other.

I don't care if it looks retarded. Anyone over the age of eight who cares all that much about how a mascot looks is a dullard and a simpleton. He can and should look stupid. He's a mascot.

And the term "Rebel" is ambiguous, sorta like "Volunteers" or "Crimson Tide." The mascot can be ANYTHING given the team name (hence Tennessee's hound dog and Alabama's elephant).

Right back at ya.

quote:

He's not the one starting the initiative. He's just doing what he should do under State law. He's not endorsing anything. He's just approving an initiative per the Mississippi Constitution.

You really don't have a clue what you're talking about, yet you're so confident in your opinions on this. Give it a rest.
