How did y'all feel about special teams under Mullen and specifically Coach Knox?

TIA

South Alabama's football team can answer this for you.

Oh, I hope you’re joking and know the answer.

Mediocre is being very nice. Our kicking game was among the worst in the country, save maybe 1 or 2 years.

Not good.

Mullen coached special teams himself here. Punting and kick coverage wasn't terrible, but FG kicking was largely bad.

Our special teams were good 6 out of the 9 years Mullen was at MSU. We had 3 really bad years with our field goal kicking, and 6 solid years. He's going to place a lot more importance on ball security than he is on big plays on punt returns.

It is a legit question. I do not know the answer. I did not watch much MSU football, so I would not know.

UF had good specialists recently under Mac but horrible coverage and return units. There are a lot of reports from camp that there is more of focus in practice on special teams. I also saw a stat that MSU averaged 4.2 kick blocks a season under Mullen. During that same time frame UF averaged just over 1.

We blocked kicks because of Jefferey Simmons, I wouldn’t give Mullen the credit on those

I imaging that most of those were FG attempts. He does like to get his big uglies involved in getting a great push up the middle.

Special teams improved quite a bit when Mullen turned over responsibilities to Knox in 2014. We just lacked any real quality kickers or returners.

Punters were OK. Kickers were not very reliable, and I believe that is because Mullen does not have a good relationship with any of the kicking gurus out there, so they don't steer their players to Mullen. I've had 2 private kicking coaches tell me this.

Our punt return teams these last couple seasons were interesting: we could not find a reliable return man to catch the ball, but we were decent up front at blocking punts and kicks.

Kickoff coverage was fine, but never had an explosive kick returner.

Expect a couple cringe worthy fakes every year. Expect people with good hands and no explosiveness on returns.

And before him, this guy named Fletcher Cox. He was a decent ball player if my memory serves.

Punting (actual kicker) was always great. Kicker was garbage or mediocre until last year.
returns were so so
defense was pretty good mostly because of awesome DL

all in all not too shabby. He did seem to enjoy breaking in WRs by putting them as punt returner. Seemed as if he wanted them to have a welcome to the SEC moment.

They were good at times, bad at others.

Well. Many of the fans in the stands, prior to last year, would exhale in relief when an extra point went through.

And we lost to South Alabama and subsequently LSU in 16 because the best kicker on the team couldn’t hit the side of an aircraft carrier.

But everything else went just swimmingly.

He made quite a few dumbass calls on ST's too. Fake punts at his own 35/40 yard line. shite like that too.

Logan Cooke was a beast punter.

FG kicking sucked arse until Christmann showed up last year.

We seemed to have decent schemes and alignments and execution of coverages, but kickers who actually put the foot on the ball always sucked. Dan never recruited a decent kicker

Special teams directly cost us:

1 game in 2017
3 games in 2016
1 game in 2015
2 games in 2011
2 games in 2010
2 games in 2009

He was as bad at special teams as he was good at developing quarterbacks.
