Horrible news. Leach should be well respected as a coach and person.

Yeah, I've already scheduled tests because of my mom's health issues. My grandfather passed at 60 and her at 61. I don't want to leave this place in 22 years if I can help it.

Lots of place do cardiac screening for almost nothing. I suppose they end up getting new patients through findings but it costs way less than what it should (like $99). Most will do a fast CT to measure your calcium score (plaque buildup), EKG, lipid panel, BP, all of those things and it gives a baseline and you repeat every 5 years unless there are other findings.

Yeah, this is when they focus on comfort and providing a peaceful place for someone that is close to passing.

If he didn’t have oxygen to the brain for 35 mins like the emt said , is it even possible to not be close to brain dead?

Very similar to what a few other posters described, I found my hubby non-responsive after spending the whole day with an oxygen count getting lower and lower. He also had CHF (congestive heart failure) and had really bad allergies then as it was spring. Could be similar to Leach having recently had pneumonia, if true. His oxygen got lot at night and he couldn't wake up...when I came home that evening at like 7:30, he his level was only 48%. He got oxygen, meds, IVs, etc. Eventually a cath and a stent. He lived 2 more years and was by no means in great shape, but could drive, take care of himself, etc. He finally had a massive heart attack. He was 57, 8 years ago.

If the VA won't do it, I have a private doctor with my other insurance that will. I'll pay for whatever I need to. I did myself a favor by quitting alcohol for a year now, but I'd like to know what I could possibly have waiting that doesn't show up on standard tests.

I'd recommend anyone get a checkup even if you think "this couldn't happen to me". I thought that way until a few weeks ago.

ETA: Or go to the bathroom and sit on the toilet. You'd be shocked at the number of cardiac arrest patients I've drug out of the bathroom.

It's happened several times at my post acute hospital as well.

I'm thinking you promote the interim for a year, get your AD situation sorted, and then re-assess

This sounds reasonable, but you almost gotta give Arnett (or whoever it ends up being) a minimum four year deal… otherwise, they’re gonna get killed in recruiting.

It’s a really tough situation… best hope is arnett hits it out of the park, and provides some cover to hire the right guy for AD. The football program is on solid footing bc of Leach. A competent coach should be able to run with it.

This will be a unique deal… no program that I can think of has had to deal with this… there’s no clear example of how to do it successfully.

This entire situation has made me realize I need to get myself checked out extensively. I had a blood panel done a month or so ago and they said it looked good but now I want to get additional testing to make sure. My family doesn’t have the best history

Everyone should do this and don't put it off. Fairly routine blood tests can head off life changing illnesses.

That shite probably saved my life a couple of years back. Took it on a whim and found out I basically had a Black's BBQ franchise in my right coronary artery. I worked out regularly, both powerlifting and jogging with only a day or two off a week, and never had any issues that I noticed. You just never know.

This is stuff that makes you think about your priorities in life. Those kids have to be thinking the same thing. You gotta think those kids are going through it as much as the family is, and the info those kids are getting is through Twitter or on some message board. You know they are seeing people troll the situation which doesn’t help. They are seeing these unofficial reports out there. That has to be getting to a lot of those players. So I doubt they play. There’s more to life than just a game with an egg shaped ball.

Pretty sure he would want them to play. I know it's cliche', but it does build character and just sitting around moping does no one any good. It's a lesson in how sometimes, even when things are bad, you just do what you gotta do.

This. Has saved a ton of lives. Many MD's consider them worthless, but only because they don't understand how to use the data. Helps us intervene early and prevent future problems. Many pt's can be hardheaded and refuse a cardiac eval despite risk factors. I've found I can often get them to relent to these since they are fast, inexpensive and painless. I tell them I'll leave them alone if it's normal and if cost is an issue, I can get them done for $40 bucks or free if I call in a favor.

When they get that elevated score back, the next steps become much easier. If any good can come of this, it's that it may save lives by lighting a fire under a few people's asses to get checked out. Never fails when we have an unexpected cardiac death in some one "healthy". A few tragedies have prevented many, many more.

It seems like the longer this goes without an actual good update the more it seems this is for the worst unfortunately. I pray that’s not the case. It’s so quiet surrounding this and you would think to hear something of note.
