Some non-Bruce Pearl news on your lunch break
quote:
@NFL_CFB: Johnny Manziel has "bust written all over him," says Merril Hoge. LINK
quote:
"He has absolutely no instinct or feel for pocket awareness. He has an instinct to run. That's a bad instinct if you're going to have that in the National Football League. You have to play in the pocket with traffic around you and throw it. When traffic comes around him, he runs, and that's dangerous in the National Football League," Hoge said. "His skill set does not transition to the National Football League, and it is a big, big risk. In fact, I see bust written all over him, especially if he's drafted in the first round."

Everything here is 100% accurate.

This may be the stupidest statement of 2014. He thrives on instinct and he knows when pressure is coming a second before it's there.

Yes it is, and it's true for every NFL QB, just not sure why he has parked JFF in that spot.

bec JFF doesn't play or has the size like most NFL Qbs.

I believe what Hoge is trying to articulate there is that he doesn't step up in the pocket when pressured but rather bails and then works his magic. I imagine that Hoge is under the belief that doing it that way won't work in the NFL so he needs to learn to play within the pocket.

Fair enough and I can go with that. It just seems a tad early to pronounce that this won't be a part of JFF's skill set. He hasn't even been drafted yet much less have opportunity against NFL calibre. Well, we'll see.

Well if that were to occur, the pre draft would be very boring.

Are we doing it right?

Hoge was critical of Manziel in the areas that quarterback coaches hold dearest: decision-making, accuracy and pocket awareness.
WTF? Wasnt JFF the most accurate passer in the SEC last year?

and 3rd in the nation.

He had 4th highest completion percentage in nation at 69.9 He had 3rd highest QB rating in nation at 172.9
So basically: absolutely no instinct, feel for pocket awareness and poor accuracy is the exact opposite of what is true.

Hoge is a dumbass.

Well, I'm not seeing the basis for what he's saying.

The issue he will have in the NFL is he won't be able to just heave the ball and pray his receiver is the one that comes don with it like he would sometimes do at A&M. NFL DB's are too good.
