So if a kid is playing highschool football and gets kicked off of his highschool team, but graduates from that highschool and is going to play college football, would it be ok for the NCAA clearinghouse to say "yea you met all of the requirements to play college football, but we're going to make you sit out a year because you got kicked off of your highschool team"?

It's not out of the realm of possibility. NCAA is making themselves a Monopoly lately and all it would take is one small case getting approved and it would open the door to many more.

Obviously not the same. He tried to transfer from one NCAA governed team to another. The first one suspended him. The NCAA had no reason to believe that he was transferring for academic reasons, so he didn't meet the criteria.

Just like the NCAA won't let a team medically redshirt a player when it is obvious that the player was never injured. The NCAA has to interpret rules case by case or else teams and players would be abusing them left and right. Any similar organization would do the same.

If the NCAA weren't hypocrites they'd shut down the FCS.

But they are. It's okay, they'll just make shite up as they go because that's what governing bodies with no checks and balances are allowed to do.

I'm tempted to bump some of the OM chest-pumping threads after Masoli announced his transfer. But I have a life so I'll just laugh my arse off instead. Karma is a fricking bitch sometimes.

Go check out the "over/under Masoli starts" thread. You will see what I had said about him on post 99. No chest bumping or thinking he was a savior from me. I'm not happy about the denial, but nobody expected him to be God. Just maybe give us 1-2 more chances at games we shouldn't have won...

All governing bodies interpret their rules, sometimes on the fly. No one wants a completely rigid governing body, because no such body has enough rules and amendments to cover every situation. There has to be some level of interpretation. This was a case of good interpretation. Cut and dry.

NCAA Statement Regarding Graduate Transfer Rules
quote:

Mr. Paulus has expressed an interest in competing in a second sport at another Division I school after earning an undergraduate degree at Duke University and competing on the men’s basketball team. The NCAA encourages and applauds academic achievement and realizes this is an unique situation and opportunity for Mr. Paulus. Student-athletes seldom have the opportunity to transfer late in their college careers and compete in a second sport after four seasons of competition. The NCAA established a “students first” waiver process to address unique situations and extenuating circumstances such as this that are not outlined in our rules.
quote:

If a student-athlete wants to transfer and immediately compete as a graduate student, the college or university they are transferring to would need to seek a waiver, because in most cases they would have to sit out a year before competing under NCAA transfer rules and would not have any remaining eligibility. One of the factors our members have determined is appropriate for a graduate student waiver is if the transfer is academically motivated.

Exactly. The NCAA came up with their opinion of what his intentions were. He had already graduated from Oregon, but it's the NCAA's opinion that his transfer isn't because of academics. There is no way for the NCAA to know what his intentions actually were by transferring. And that is the problem, the NCAA making decisions based on their opinions of situations instead of going by the rules.

Somewhere, hidden from the public eye, a former second string quarterback says "excellent" while playing an air guitar.

I think Stanley will be an excellent leader. I think he'll surprise people. I still think we can win 8 games this season.
