He's been stuck on this for days now. He can't grasp the fact that the players did nothing different; the conference just reacted differently.

Yes, I'm sure me pointing out the difference one more time is really going to make a difference with the 2 of you.
One was an exception to the rules, the other changed the rules. It's not complicated unless you want to keep pretending you are somehow a victim who the entire conference turned against for "no reason" while ignoring others.
So yeah, keep fricking crying.
