The LSU brand post-Saban. Recruiting elite classes to LSU isn't exactly difficult (at least relatively speaking), especially given that they are the only even semi-relevant school in a talent rich state.
you don't sustain that for a decade because of a brand name. ask miami how that worked out for them. or nebraska. or tennessee. or notre dame. or lsu in the 90s. i could go on

who?
Currently? Oregon and Oklahoma State
Mike Gundy is doing far better in Stillwater than Miles ever did, but I don't LSU fans are beating down his door.

we were actually having a decent argument....now you're just trolling.
ETA: Dinardo started the recruiting...not Saban. Saban improved it.

Oh how I love the "anyone can recruit elite talent to LSU" argument.

Why not? Michigan, USC, Texas, etc. manage to keep pulling elite classes despite extended periods of suck.

Yes, but here's the difference: Nick Saban routinely CRUSHES the opposition. His average margin of victory is over a full touchdown higher at Bama than Miles' is at LSU.
While I agree, I personally think that goes to both their overall styles IMO ... Saban is a better Favorite coach, and Miles is more suited as an Underdog coach (chicken/egg...Saban more of an Xs and Os guy, Miles more of a player's coach). Unfortunately for Miles at LSU, LSU is only the underdog once per year and it doesn't necessarily play to his "style."
I do agree, though...Saban is a better GameDay coach than Miles. The only point I was making is that GameDay coaching is mostly irrelevant in the college game ... The most talented teams (on a consistent basis) win the most games. I guess if you're seperating the best-from-the-best (LSU vs Bama), then yes some of that other stuff might come into play, but in the longrun the only thing that matters is reeling in Top5-10 classes year-in-year-out. Do that, and I don't care what your name is, you are going to win consistently at a high level in college.

so basically what you're saying is that all these awesome high school kids could've just walked onto campus, shown up on Saturdays and won 80% of their games, 3 SEC West titles, 2 SEC championships, 1 NC and played for another NC without any coaching from Miles because they're all just so super duper talented and stuff.

He left Gundy with a four win team that started four walk-ons in 2005. So no, no he did not.

Les Miles went 7-5 at OSU in 2004, losing to all the relevant Big XII schools at the time. He signed the #57 recruiting class and left Gundy with less than 60 scholarship players. Gundy started a team full of walk-ons and underclassmen for two years because of it.

Miles returned to Oklahoma State in 2001 as head coach. In the three years prior to Miles' arrival in Stillwater, the Cowboys finished 5–6, 5–6, and 3–8. Oklahoma State posted another losing record (4–7) in Miles' first season at the helm, but subsequently achieved winning records during each of the following three seasons – 8–5, 9–4, and 7–5, respectively. His last three seasons at Oklahoma State ended in invitations to the Houston, Cotton, and Alamo Bowls, respectively.
During the last game of Miles' first season as head coach, OSU faced Oklahoma, which was ranked #4 in the nation. Despite the fact that OSU was facing Oklahoma on the road, Miles led his team to a 16–13 upset victory over the Sooners.
During Miles' second season, OSU again ended the regular season with a game against Oklahoma. This time Oklahoma was ranked the No. 3 team in the country. And yet again, Miles led his team to a 38–28 upset victory over the Sooners. As a result of his team's performance during his second year, Miles was named the Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year by the Associated Press in 2002.
